I have used this color coded system for years and the students have an easier time learning the tradtional steps to long division. I do phase this "helper" out. The helper is also connected to the saying "Does McDonalds Sell CheeseBurgers?" to help them remember the steps. I hope this helps your students as much as it has helped mine.

It allows them to talk with partners about their understanding of the problem and what action to take.
