They wanted to see what a successful attempt at a math task would look like. They wanted to compare where they were academically at the beginning of the year to where they are now. I have used this color coded system for years and the students have an easier time learning the tradtional steps to long division. I do phase this "helper" out. The helper is also connected to the saying "Does McDonalds Sell CheeseBurgers?" to help them remember the steps. I hope this helps your students as much as it has helped mine.

I have my kids use this before they even begin a word problem, along with my "problem solving rubric". It allows them to talk with partners about their understanding of the problem and what action to take. Children don't have to write under each one, but it needs to be understood before solving the problem. The kids are really doing great with this! Saves time!
