Geometry Probability Project - Connected Visuals (Venn, Tree, 2-Way Tables, etc)

Created by
Amy Kowatch
This project has students collecting class data and displaying it in multiple ways, showing how those ways are connected. It helps them work with a Venn Diagram to represent "AND" from the cells in a 2-way Table and shows those cells in a Tree too. Students create the different types of questions that will be on the assessment: basic, "and", "or", "given" and independent. My "Sample" had my tree symbolically mislabeld (the M should be P(MlF) or P(MlF') etc and I would have liked all the "And"s l

Trigonometry & Triangles; Showing How 2 "Same" Things Are Not Equal

This activity uses the basic trigonometric ratio to show that it is possible for shapes to have equal measures but still have different areas. Using cell phones as an example, the students will compare two different cell phones that have the same screen size, but different aspect ratios, and prove that the same screen size does not necessarily equate to the same amount of screen area. They will find the length of the sides using all three trigonometric functions, and then calculate the area. The

Bees have this sting for hexagons. Let's find out why. Using the driving question, "Why hexagons?" Students use many topics of mathematics to examine the fascinating bee hive. Students can expect discussing angles, areas, perimeters, volumes, as well as linear and quadratic patterns. In this project, students will design a geometric garden, calculate area and perimeter of each of the shapes in their garden, and then decide what they will put in their garden, and cost it all out using the internet or sheets you have printed off from the internet, and/or local sale papers. Depending on their level, they may calculate volume as well (if they decide to use mulch, gravel or other bedding at a certain thickness. Editable (Word document) project include tables to show calculation

Geometry- Introduction to Proofs - Basic Proof Practice

Introducing students to geometric proofs in a geometry class can be a difficult task for both teachers and students. I created this introductory lesson to help get my students' brains in gear. After teaching the first few introductory chapters the kids should have some understanding of basic definitions, postulates and theorems. This worksheet will help them "squeeze" as much information as possible from "givens" in formal proofs. Since I started using this paper and other similar worksheets
