Preview of Linear Spaghetti Strength

Linear Spaghetti Strength

This linear relation lab activity is perfect for connecting patterns in real data with linear relations. Students test the strength of spaghetti by finding the minimum mass that a bundle of spaghetti can support. They then test again; increasing the number of strands in their bundle to see if there's a connection between the number of spaghetti strands and the minimum breaking mass. Data is very consistently linear. Materials needed: Spaghetti (1 box per class), styrofoam cups, string, pennies (

Graphs that show multiple sets of data can sometimes be confusing to some students. This exercise offers an opportunity to create a graph with two sets of data. Creating such a graph can sometimes make interpreting them easier for the student. The instructor can feel free to increase complexity by instructing students to draw best-fit lines, calculating slopes of best-fit lines, or otherwise using the graph to compare and contrast data.

Skittles Challenge - Ratios/Fractions/Percents

Reinforce any ratios/fractions/percents lesson with the fun Skittles Challenge. Each student gets a pack of Skittles and completes the worksheet by predicting what is in their bag and then to reflect what is actually in the bag. The information is then reflected in ratio, fraction, reduced fraction and percent. The second page includes some critical thinking questions and a bar graph to reflect the data. Please email me if you would like a version of this for M & Ms instead.

Graphing in Science! Reading, Vocabulary and Answer Key

I have started doing weekly readings with vocabulary because our assessments have changed to ones in which decoding from informational text is an imperative skill. This is my reading and vocabulary for graphing in science. Although graphing is a skill, it is important for students to know the 'language' of graphing so construction is a smooth process. I will be uploading a fun lab-based graphing project where students collect real-life data to graph very soon. :)
