This presentation covers the process and steps required to determine the standard form of equation of a circle. It includes background information and data on the general properties of circles (including horizontal and vertical translations) as well as an initial review of the steps involved in “completing the square” of a quadratic expression, which is sometimes required to determine the circle standard form equation. Six (6) circle solution and graphing examples are worked out in detail in

Linear Programming Applications Guided Notes

These notes include definitions, steps, and two fully broken-down examples that allow you to walk through the process of solving a linear programming application problem with your students. I used these notes in an honors precalculus course, but they could be easily modified for use in an algebra 2, advanced algebra 2, or non-honors precalculus course.

Radians Versus Degrees Part 1 - Trigonometry

This lesson is a highly animated, and visually appealing PowerPoint. From this lesson students should understand the following: What degrees are, and how they're defined. What radians are, and how they're defined. Why there are not an integer number of radians in a full rotationThis is not a how-to lesson, but instead a lesson designed to give students an intuitive sense of what a radian is, and how the approach measuring an angle differently than how degrees approach measuring an angle. First choose which partner will be “x” and which will be “o”. Take turns picking a problem listed below and solve. The answer to the problem you select should be listed below. Find the answer and mark with an “x” or an “o”. First partner to get three in a row, wins. Covers: Finding focus, directrix, and axis of symmetry. Also requires students to write an equation when given the focus, directrix, and axis of symmetry.

IB recently changed Internal Assessments from having investigations of Type I and Type II to having a portfolio. Even though IB would no longer require students to do this type of investigation, I kept this mathematical investigation around anyway, as I think the process students go through to arrive at a formula is very valuable. I basically treat it as a project. The investigation has them look into the problem of determining the maximum number of "slices" a pizza may be cut into with a rand

This is a graphic organizer to be used as notes for defining and describing graphs of rational functions. An example is given for finding vertical asymptotes and two methods for finding horizontal asymptotes. The first is to find the inverse function then see where it is undefined. The second is to divide the numerator and denominator by the highest power of x then find the value when x approaches infinity. It does not go into detail on actually graphing the functions and does not include holes.

Factoring to Find Zeroes PPT

This PPT complements the engageNY Algebra 2 lesson on factoring to find zeroes and multiplicity of functions. It is a more advanced lesson and should only be taught after the fundamental factoring methods have been reviewed/taught to students. Groupwork at the end of the PPT refers to selections from the Holt McDougal Algebra 2 textbook.

This is a one-page matching worksheet for students to be able to recognize and evaluate logarithms that are expanded and condensed after they have learned log properties. After they match the expanded logarithm to the condensed version, they evaluate it. The solutions are on the second page. I use this as an end-of-class activity to do a check for understanding.

This is a quick reference sheet I give my students so they don't have to stop class and ask me for help when they receive an ERROR message on their calculators. It shows the most common error messages that they run into during pre-calculus (WINDOW RANGE, INVALID DIM, DIM MISMATCH, SYNTAX) and how to solve it. Many of my students are intimidated by the many buttons of the TI-83/84, especially because it is so much less intuitive than their calculator apps on their phones. They've found this to

I wrote this daily assessment for my students to show how they were progressing on the topic of functions and using function notation. I project daily assessments at the front board for the first 10 minutes of class, and they typically cover material taught two classes ago, which gives the students a chance to do the homework and ask questions about it before they are assessed. Since my students normally sit at tables for two, I have the kid on the left side of the table take the "left side"
