Fill out a bracket, watch the tournament unfold and then mathematically analyze how you did! This activity is flexible enough to be used for a variety of levels. I have used all 6 pages for an AP Statistics class, and have used pages 1 through 5 for an Algebra or Algebra 2 class. You could even use it in lower levels as long as you are covering percents, and basic stats like mean, median, mode and graphing. The document is editable so you can adjust/delete to tailor to the level of statistic

Graphing the Mean | Your Mean Student - Project Based Learning

Graphing the Mean - Your students will experience a math task that will lead to a group presentation. They will compose questions, collect data, collate data, determine the ‘mean’, show the data in various graphs and design a poster to present the ‘mean student’. Slides include -What the unit will cover -How mean are you? What will you be looking for? -What is the mean? -How mean are you? -Template for recording the mean student -Ideas for recording data -Group guidelines – it’s your turn -Types

In 6th grade students learn the basic foundations of statistics- how to collect, analyze, and discuss data. This project allows students to authentically experience the process. First, students will create their own statistical questions. They will then collect data to answer their question and organize their data into different displays (Part 1). Next, students will use measures of center and range to describe their data (Part 2). Then, students will create a box plot and find the interquartil

Probability - Chance After brainstorming the various numerical and language descriptor for describing the likelihood of events happening, students created probability lines to make connections between these different representations. Students were then challenged to create an individual probability line in their books, cutting and pasting these chance words and numbers in the correct place. Good activity to assess students knowledge of number relationships - decimals, percentages etc.

Students can create mini trifold boards, to display any science experiment using the Scientific Method format with this Word document template. Teachers can save and share this with their students using public file storage available on school servers, Google Drive, etc. This classroom-tested template was used for a Valentine Candy Heart Investigation project I developed. Student sample work may be viewed on my classroom web site here: http://www.mrsdingman.com/Vday_Mini_Tri-Fold_Julia.pdf htt

Compare the teams and fairness of bracketology in the NCAA basketball tournament! Students use a current year bracket and win-loss record of the teams to find and analyze percentages. Answers change each year, but this is what makes things fun to look at! A sample answer key is provided. Practice: - Ratios as Fractions - Converting to Decimals - Converting to Percentages - Analysis for real world interpretation Check out these other items in my store for a comprehensive March Madness Project!

Creating charts that are precise, effective, visually appealing and authentic is a pretty big feat! Do away with the anchor chart paper and the countless hours or prep-work and use these to amp up your teaching! I use these with my grades 5 and 6 students in my split class, but they can easily be used as Reachback or revision in grade 7 or for students needing extra exposure; like younger students who are enriched or older students who are in adaptation scolaire. This collection of 11 charts

This exercise is incredibly fun! It is designed to challenge students to explore data analysis and discover about the math concepts of recursion and probability. Students break up in groups and work on modeling a notional Skittle City population. I firmly believe that experience should come before learning formal math formulas and definitions. This is a great way to get the students engaged and have them learn these concepts without even realizing it! Full instructor guide and Answer Key include

Have your students calculate measures of central tendency on data they collect themselves. You can come up with a question for them to ask their peers, or you can have them come up with one on their own -- just make sure the answer to the question is a number (examples: how many siblings you have, how many pets you have). There is a chart for data collection; a number line for a dot plot or line plot; spaces to record the mean, median, mode, range, and outlier of the data; and a place to provide

Overview of Mr. Bill's Store

I learned many years ago that the most effective way of keeping math engaging for students is through SELECTIVE PROBLEM SOLVING. All kinds of problem solving...not just traditional "solve this equation" problems. I will offer teachers ideas for keeping kids excited about math. Such as...building a probability distribution of outcomes from throwing dice...constructing a pendulum that will draw Lissajous figures...constructing a Foucault pendulum...how to do interesting large-scale astronomical
