This activity guides the learner in finding the surface area of a 3-D object (cube). TLW classifies the 3-D object by labeling its edges, faces, and vertices. Then, given dimensions and a visual representation of the net of a cube, TLW calculate the area of each face and sum the total for the cube's surface area. I use this resource as an interactive math journal activity for my alternate middle school math class, but it can be used as differentiated notes, quiz, or for reinforcement or review.

I created this handout to go along with a pumpkin math activity I always do with my students on or just before Halloween. You will need to bring in one or more pumpkins. I like to have one large one for modeling and some smaller ones for students to measure. I cut open the top of the large pumpkin and let the kids pull the guts out to count the seeds, and they love it! You could even bake them and bring them back to school for a yummy treat the next day. The handout intentionally does not list
