At our school, we use various standardized tests to measure students' progress in addition to the state tests that take a long time to report with results. I wanted a way to show parents their child's growth in comparison to the other students in the grade as well as their progress towards their goal for the end of the year.

Our school is making the switch to standards based grading and we are grading all written responses on a 4 point rubric. This rubric is vertically aligned to the k-4 convention standards with 3rd grade defining "proficient."

I use this phoneme/ grapheme resource to help all of my students see the spellings for the most common sounds in English. Each letter of the alphabet has an accompanying image that starts with the same sound or letter in Spanish allowing for ELLs to learn English phonics and spelling at an accelerated rate. My goal for my developing readers is to be able to recognize long vowel patterns to improve fluency.

We put this parent note together to help parents and kids enjoy their 20 minutes of reading each night. We found that many parents thought that 20 minutes a night meant that students had to struggle letter by letter for 20 minutes and parents and students were starting to resent it!
