Decimal Place Value Memory (Number/Number Word Matching Game)

This is a fun activity that can be used for practice and reinforcement with place value concepts using decimals to the tenths, hundredths and thousandths. The place value concepts go from billions to thousandths. I use it with fifth grade but it could easily be adapted to fourth or sixth and seventh. I have a similar game for lower grades available for free from this website, as well. It is played in traditional "memory" style. Students turn the cards face down and take turns attempting to ma

Holiday Menu Project: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter

This item is a great project to do before a holiday break. I use it in my classroom if I finish a lesson just before a break, so I don't have to start something new. It could be used with Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any holiday. I traditionally use it at Thanksgiving, but it could be easily adapted to other holidays. The students will work with a partner to plan a meal. This involves guests, the meal, and the cost of the meal. Students also have to convert recipes to accommodate the nu

Number / Number Word Memory

This is a fun activity that can be used for practice and reinforcement with place value concepts. The place value concepts are between 1 and 100. I use a similar game with fifth grade (available on this website), but adapted it for lower level elementary. It is played in traditional "memory" style. Students turn the cards face down and take turns attempting to match numbers with their correct word form. It could also be played individually. I use it as a warm-up game, review game, or choice

National Fair State Report Forms and Information

You may be wondering what a National Fair is! Well, at my school it is a 44 year-old tradition done every year in fifth grade. It is a six-week-long project where each student selects a state (a different state if possible). On the night of our fall Open House all the students are set up in the gym with their presentations. It is usually all out! Students work on a printed report, memorize a speech, dress as an historical figure from their state, have a food that is representative of their state

Interactive Activites or Learning Centers about Snakes

These activities will work as individual activities or with a learning center in an early elementary classroom. These are activities I created to go with a basal reader book about snakes, but they can both work with any book or unit with snakes. I used them as a week-long center activity, but they could be used in one day or lesson, as well. The students will be reinforcing fact and opinion as well as measurement in feet. Keywords: snake, measurement, learning center, group, fact, opinion, fee

Rounding Rules Poster and Handout

I use this item when I introduce rounding. It could be used with many grade levels. I have an enlarged poster in my room, but I also print a copy for each student to include in their math notebook. If you have any questions, please email me: jen22577@yahoo.com. I will happy to answer any questions. If you download and are able to use this in your classroom, please come back and leave feedback. I would also appreciate any comments or suggestions! Thanks for looking! Jennifer Nash Dont forge

Teaching style

I used a variety of teaching styles in my classroom. I employed the use of many products, as well as, contracts, layered curriculum and activities menus. I think a good balance of teacher direction and student choice is beneficial to student learning and achievement.
