Holiday Menu Project: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter

This item is a great project to do before a holiday break. I use it in my classroom if I finish a lesson just before a break, so I don't have to start something new. It could be used with Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any holiday. I traditionally use it at Thanksgiving, but it could be easily adapted to other holidays. The students will work with a partner to plan a meal. This involves guests, the meal, and the cost of the meal. Students also have to convert recipes to accommodate the nu

Animal Group Classification PowerPoint

This is a PowerPoint that I used to introduce the animal classification unit in second grade. It could easily be adapted to lower or higher grade levels. Another way I used this was as a template. Students were grouped and only had the title on the slide. They then had to list the characteristics of the animal group they were responsible for. Then we were able to create a PowerPoint that everyone contributed to. You could also have groups complete an entire PowerPoint. This is a basic PowerP

End of Year History Choice Project with Rubrics

This is a product I have used as an end of year project when teaching Texas History, but it could be EASILY adapted to another history class (or any topic, for that matter). I’ve included a list of topics that the students could choose from in Texas History. U.S. History classes are so varied in their topics that I didn’t include a list. But you should easily be able to come up with a list of event and people that have been studied throughout the year. This file includes directions for how I

Number / Number Word Memory

This is a fun activity that can be used for practice and reinforcement with place value concepts. The place value concepts are between 1 and 100. I use a similar game with fifth grade (available on this website), but adapted it for lower level elementary. It is played in traditional "memory" style. Students turn the cards face down and take turns attempting to match numbers with their correct word form. It could also be played individually. I use it as a warm-up game, review game, or choice

Glogster Teacher Guide and Student Handout

This is a handout that I used in my district to present Glogster for teacher use as a technology integration tool. Glogster is an excellent online tool for incorporating technology into content curriculum. This is an easy to follow, step-by-step list for setting up and using Glogster.com. It also includes a step-by-step student handout. Turn your students loose with Web 2.0!! If you have any questions, please email me: jen22577@yahoo.com. I will be happy to answer any questions. Adaptation Activity: Zoo Scavenger Hunt

This activity is meant to be completed during or after a study of animal adaptations. This is a fun activity, enjoyed by students and parents. The students take a field trip to a local zoo and go on a scavenger hunt looking for specific animals. This requires a combination of logic and higher-order thinking skills. The students have clues to help them identify animals by their adaptations, and the students are then required to give additional examples of adaptation. I have used the activity wi

Foreign Language House Learning Centers/Stations

These stations are created for a Spanish classroom (introductory to Level 1), but they are adaptable to any language. It includes grading rubrics, tips and guidelines, and five learning stations for learning house and home vocabulary. It encompasses a variety of learning techniques and learning styles. It can be easily adapted to any classroom. **It's uploading weird to the site. I used margins set at .7" on all sides. That should take care of any problems after the download. Please let me know

Spanish Oral Presentation Project - easily adapted for other languages

This is an oral presentation that I use with my introductory middle school students, but it is applicable to any introductory level. Students use this as their first presentation, and it is all given in Spanish. It is a very brief speech about their likes and dislikes. Step-by-step instructions are given for the students. The students also create a visual to accompany the oral presentation. A rubric is included to grade the presentation and the visual. The final page has two rubrics in order t

National Fair State Report Forms and Information

You may be wondering what a National Fair is! Well, at my school it is a 44 year-old tradition done every year in fifth grade. It is a six-week-long project where each student selects a state (a different state if possible). On the night of our fall Open House all the students are set up in the gym with their presentations. It is usually all out! Students work on a printed report, memorize a speech, dress as an historical figure from their state, have a food that is representative of their state

This is an activity I use in my Texas History class, but it could be adapted to any class where people are studied in depth. Other teachers in my building have adapted it for U.S. History and English (novel character biographies). The students love using the glogster website, and it's safe and user friendly. I do highly recommend that you use the FREE edu version at edu.glogster.com. It allows much more control of your students. Included with this purchase: Biography Outline Glogster Biography

Benefits and Uses of Spelling Contracts with Example

Contracts are an easy way to differentiate spelling. Contracts can be used with any spelling list. My students do not all have the same list, so contracts work out great for differentiation. With the contract students MUST have a goal of 4 activities for an A. I assign one activity that everyone must complete, and the other three activities are chosen by the students from the weeks choices. You could vary the number of required activities or the number of pre-selected activities any way you

Test Corrections Worksheet (reteaching tool)

In order to meet state and national standards, I created a simple worksheet for students to complete after any quiz or test. This allows the students to work (with me or alone) to correct their test corrections. This also allows for re-teaching so that they may retest, if desired, at a later time. I require the work to be completed before students can retest. Another option would be to give partial credit back for every corrected answer. I use this with my Texas History classes, but it could

These are activities I created to go with a basal reader book about snakes, but they can both work with any book or unit with snakes. I used them as a week-long center activity, but they could be used in one day or lesson, as well. The students will be reinforcing fact and opinion as well as measurement in feet. Native Americans of Texas Organizer

This is a graphic organizer I use with my seventh grade Texas History students. I let them work in small groups to fill in the chart. This could be done individually, as a cloze-type activity, or even used as an outline for notes. The Native American groups listed correspond with CSCOPE. The page numbers correspond with the textbook "Lone Star," but you could use your own text book or the CSCOPE information to fill in the chart.

Take-Home Book Bag Templates and Organization

Take home book bags are plastic bags with a collection of books inside that can be “checked out” by students. They are a great way for students to bring literature home on subjects they’re interested in. I used them in kindergarten and second grade, but the idea can be used at many elementary grade levels. This provided a way for the students to use my books without them being shoved in a box and forgotten. The book bags also included a spiral notebook for a school-to-home connection. The studen
