In this lesson, students will use a shared reading of "The Way I Feel" by Janan Cain to practice making text to self connections. Opportunities for making connections through discussion, writing and drawing are provided. The lesson is structured to include a hook, mini-lesson, guided practice and finally independent practice. JUST ADD A BOOK!
You know those recipes that tell you to "just add water"? This lesson encourages you to simply add a book. It is a text to self connection mini-lesson with two response worksheets. The emphasis of this lesson is to encourage children to make a connection between the friendship in Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree" and their own friendships. Topics like - how to be a good friend - are explored.

In this activity, students analyze a piece of artwork and write their responses to focused artistic questions. It can be used in a myriad of ways. Perhaps, your class is headed on a field trip to a local art museum and you want each child to critically consider one piece of artwork.
