This is a Jeopardy Review Game I made for Chapter 1 of our Social Studies Textbook. Our Textbook tite is "Building A Nation" by Scott Foresman (5th Grade). It is a PowerPoint game. This is a very explicit lesson for students to teach them how to summarize. It uses the acronym "MIDAS" to help students remember exactly how to summarize. It also models how to summarize using a nonfiction text. The final slides teach the difference between direct quotations and paraphrasing in summaries. Great for new Common Core standards!

This PowerPoint explains the purpose of descriptive writing. It includes sample model paragraphs for the students to refer to in their own writing. It also guides the students through the planning stage of writing a 5 paragraph descriptive writing piece. It gives them a "planning assignment" on the last slide.
