Ecology Owl Pellet Food Chain Food Web Research Inquiry Lab

This is one of my students' favorite labs! They enjoy working in partners to determine what kinds of animals owls eat - and then to apply that knowledge to draw conclusions. Students have found everything from an entire bird skull (intact) to a snake skeleton mixed in with all of the vole, shrew, rat and mice bones. I love the many different concepts I can tie into this lab and the many directions we can go to make connections. I hope you enjoy this lab as much as my students and I do! This

This is a great web quest to help students gain an understanding of the different parts of the cell cycle. Many different kinds of learning opportunities and resources are utilized in this web quest which helps with student recall. I find that the easiest way to use this web quest is to create a Google Classroom doc so that students can click directly on the links rather than typing the addresses in. However, it works just as well when students type in the addresses Happy questing!

This is the document that I use for my class disclosure each year. I have learned over the year that if I send something home with a signature at the very end, no one actually looks at anything. By breaking things up into the categories that I am likely to get questions on (sometimes more than once . . . or a lot more than once), to make the policies and procedures a little more clear. Also, by having both the parent or guardian sign each section, as a teacher I can refer back to that signatu

This is a guided notes and discussion page that accompanies the video by Crash Course Biology, "Liquid Awesome." The content is used with permission from Crash Course Biology and is not to be sold or resold. Crash Course Biology videos are some of my favorites for bell work, discussions, and introduction or review of material. Guided notes help my students to keep pace with the videos, and provide a reference that they can use as a study help when preparing for assessments.

self directed learning style, cooperative learning group survey

This is a survey that I created to determine the comfort level of my students with self-directed learning vs. teacher-directed learning. This survey is useful when placing students in collaborative groups. Students who are comfortable taking educational risks tend to work well together – much more so than students who are very cautious and who feel comfortable within a very scaffolded framework. Not only that . . . I have also found that students are very curious about how they learn, and som

Student daily objective learning target bell work reflection metacognition

This is my favorite way to keep the start and end of class routines predictable and effective, and to incorporate metacognitive reflection by students. I create one of these forms for each week (or sometimes 1 form for two weeks). Students know that when they come in to the room, they get out their daily objective form, fill in the daily objective from the board, give their reflection score (1 - 5) for how comfortable they are with the daily objective, and then complete the bell work or the "d

Hello and welcome to my store! This is a lab that I use to explore a number of different ideas all at the same time: 1. The use of qualitative data in experimentation; 2. The differences between qualitative and quantitative data; 3. Chemical indicators; 4. Macromolecules; 5. Extensions to forensic science. There are two pages of teacher instructions at the end of the lab pages that can help you to successfully set up and run this lab with your students. My kids always have enjoyed this la

This is an example paper I give to my students to show them what a formal lab report looks like. It is a fictional research project completed by my dog, Phoenix. I have students go through this paper and review the different parts of a formal lab write up. They can use this paper as a model, and also to look at examples of how much detail they should put in their papers. And . . . it gives them a chance to roll their eyes at my nerdy sense of humor! :) Enjoy!

All definitions and command terms are from: IB terms and definitions are specific to the IB program. Hello and welcome to my store! This is a project that I use to reinforce information students learn in the biochemistry unit of our class. Students enjoy choosing the format for their instructional project, as well as finding a "student" to teach the information to. I have found that when students complete this project, they have a firm understanding of macromolecules and of properties of water. I recommend giving about 2 - 3 day of class time for this project and requiring anything not comp

Hello and welcome to my store! This page is an item I use with my students to reinforce the basic materials they need to know about the structure of an atom and from the periodic table. I find that by having students repeat the information, they retain and recall the information well and perform well on their assessment. In addition, students who complete this practice page are able to apply their understanding to elements that I select from the periodic table. I use this for basic review -

Additional biographical information

I love to see students engaged in science! The best "pay" for me as a teacher is when a student tells me something to the effect of, "I never realized before how interesting science is. I love science!" I love "ah ha" moments, times when the proverbial light bulb turns on - and it is visible in the facial expressions of my students. I also really enjoy working with students who have disabilities or who are twice exceptional.
