MUSCLE MAN PROJECT: SEE MUSCLES DO THEIR WORK!

This is one of my Anatomy students' favorite labs! Students place paper muscles (included) on a paper skeleton (included) by their insertions & origins. The muscles are shaped & fitted just for this skeleton so that they really work when the students manipulate them. The muscles are only taped at the insertion and origin. The middle of the muscle is then pinched or pulled & this causes the bone to extend, flex, etc.This lab also reinforces the skeletal system & anatomical terminology

THIS ACTIVITY ALLOWS STUDENTS TO SIMULATE A BYPASS SURGERY ON A CLOGGED LEFT CAROTID ARTERY. THEY ASSEMBLE A BODY (INCLUDED) AND USE RED, BLUE, & YELLOW YARN TO SIMULATE ARTERIES, VEINS, & THE CLOT. THIS ACTIVITY ALLOWS STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL WORLD OF WORKING IN THE CLINIC. THEY RESEARCH SKIN DISORDERS, BURNS, AND SKIN CANCERS INCLUDING THE ABCD RULE OF CLASSIFYING MOLES. THEY WORK AS A GROUP, PAIRS, OR INDIVUALS TO DIAGNOSE 7 PATIENTS. THEY MUST PROVIDE 2 PIECES OF EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THEIR DIAGNOSIS. THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO COVER DISORDERS OF THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME WHILE GIVING STUDENTS THE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE OF WORKING IN A CLINIC.

This activity is a card game on the major bones of the skeleton. Students form teams, choose a card, & ask their team member to point to the bone listed on the card. This Urinary System project allows students to experince the real world task of being a doctor. They research 4 different urinary disorders as a group. They are given 4 different patients with complaints and test results such as x-rays, CT scans, urinalysis results, etc. to arrive at a diagnosis. They record their results in the patient's chart as well as a treatment plan for that patient.

STUDENTS BUILD A MODEL OF THE BODY WITH BONES EXPOSED. THEY ARE GIVEN DIRECTIONS ON INJURIES THE BODY SUSTAINED DURING A CAR ACCIDENT. THEY MUST USE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF ANATOMICAL TERMS, DIRECTIONS, AND BONE NAMES TO MARK THE BODY. ONCE EACH GROUP IS FINISHED, THEY CAN SWAP AND LOOK FOR MISTAKES. IF A GROUP FINDS A MISTAKE, THEY CAN STEAL POINTS FROM THE GROUP WHO DID THE AUTOPSY. THERE IS ALSO A QR CODE AT THE END FOR ASSESSMENT AND GROUP COMPETITION.

LEARNING THE BONES OF THE SKELETON

THIS ACTIVITY ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN THE MAJOR BONES OF THE SKELETON WHILE COLOR CODING THEM. THE FINISHED PRODUCT CAN THEN BE USED AS A STUDY GUIDE OR REFERENCE TOOL. STUDENTS ALSO HAVE TO BE FAMILIAR WITH THE TYPES OF FRACTURES EITHER BY USING THEIR TEXT OR NOTES AS A REFERENCE. THEY WILL HAVE TO DRAW THE FRACTURE ON THE SKELETON ACCORDING TO INSTRUCTIONS USING ANATOMICAL NAMES, BONES, AND DIRECTIONS.

If you are like me, you are covering Genetics around Valentine's Day. This activity is perfect for reinforcing genetic principles such as Genotype, Phenotype, Complete Dominance, Incomplete Dominance, Codominance, and much, much more. Students pair female chromosomes from an "egg" and male chromosomes from a "sperm" to determine the genotype of 11 different traits for their valentine. Experience

I have been teaching 23 years in the field of Biology. I am now teaching Pre AP Biology and Anatomy. I have always enjoyed Science and sharing it with the students I teach.

Teaching style

I believe that students learn different ways. I don't use one certain teaching style. I try to incorporate a little bit of everything in each class such as lecture, group activity, independent work, lab, etc.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I have received Teacher of the Year twice in my career. I am very humbled by these two awards and will cherish them forever.

My own education history

I graduated Jacksonville State University with a B.S. degree in Biology & Chemistry. I also have a Master's from the University of Alabama in Secondary Biology Education.
