Bringing Math Forward

This STEM project uses operations with rational numbers in a real-life situation. While not necessary, the project is designed to be cross-curricular with math, social studies, and ELA. Students study the biomes of a certain continent or region and create a poster which analyzes the rainfall throughout the year. Students then design, re-design, and create a rain gauge to collect and measure rainfall locally; the rain gauge is built from recycled materials.

In this project, students will calculate with both fractions and decimals. Students choose recipes, adapt the amount of ingredients for their class or other large group, and calculate the cost per student or group member. The project can easily be made cross-curricular by requiring students to choose recipes from a region they are studying in SS or from the setting in an ELA story or novel. In this activity, students design a logo for a new ultimate frisbee team according to the owners specifications which include one or more transformations. In the teacher notes, there is a PowerPoint embedded with well-known logos and whether or not the logos contain different types of transformations.
