I have taught in a middle school setting for twenty years. I have taught the subjects of Science (Earth Science) and Social Studies (Ancient Cultures) for ten years. The last 10 years I have transitioned into Math and Reading by being our schools RTI teacher.
This investigative activity allows students to come up with their own rules on how to multiply numbers by factors of 10. Students will compare the problem to its answer for several questions. From there they will establish a pattern and come up with their own rule. They will then use their rules to practice several problems to see if their rules work.
