This 2025-2026 school year marks my 19th year in the classroom as a special education teacher. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to have experience teaching at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. Preparing for an IEP report or any other evaluation report can be quite stressful and incredibly time consuming. Although I can’t make it easier for you – trust me I wish I could :), I can at least provide you with a little bit of help when having to ask for parent input! In my first few years of teaching, I realized that asking for input from my students’ parents/guardians was at times difficult. Sometimes I would get too much information, and other times I wouldn’t get enough at all. I crea

IEP Student Transition Input Questionnaire + Google Form

*HUGE UPDATE: May 2nd, 2019*I'm not quite convinced that many high school students know exactly what they want to do after high school graduation, let alone students of the middle school age. Gathering IEP transition information for a student just turning 14, or even of actual transition age, can be difficult. Luckily, this survey helps with just that! This Student Transition Input Questionnaire is an IEP transition survey - for students of transition age. It is an informal survey/input questi

Once students turn 14 they are invited to their IEP meeting and take on more of an active/vocal role. They also start planning for their life after high school - otherwise known as transition. However, when I was an elementary learning support teacher, I felt like my students should have a voice in their IEP planning process, as well as start thinking about what they want to do/become when they are older. Yes, I did this even with third graders. Since my time as a learning support elementary t

UPDATED 8/30/2020: Now includes editable options in PowerPointOn any given day I can have several students sent to my learning support classroom (the resource room), to complete a test, homework they've missed, a project that needs worked on, notes from the day before, etc, from their regular education class. I can be helping a few different grades, in a few different subject areas, at once. It can be pretty overwhelming. I created my 'Resource Room Check-In' to help me with just that! 'Resour

For years I have been writing accommodations that I have made, or the general education teacher has made, on assessments, projects, and other graded assignments. I write very small on the back of the assignment, so that the other students wouldn't be able to read/see it when the assignments were handed back to the students. I like this method of documenting what I accommodate and the parents love it as well. I've come to the realization over the years that students - yes, even high school stud

A Brief Look Into Your Student's IEP | Elementary Special Education Resource

*UPDATED AUGUST 17TH, 2016* Out of ten years of teaching special education, this is a form I have been using for the past eight years to provide regular education teachers with as a brief look into their students' with IEPs information - whether it be the first day of school, after an IEP has been updated, or if a new student has been placed. I complete this form for each student and attach it to their IEP accommodation page(s), printed straight from their IEPs. This way the regular education

I had originally created these charts/graphs on Excel nearly 7 years ago, for the special education staff in my district. My students are made aware of our school district's policies at the beginning of the year. They know the rules, and they also know the consequences. Like other teachers, I have my own set classroom rules, but this year I decided to make and implement my own set of classroom contracts. Classroom Contracts are designed to really re-inforce policies I have for my classroom, and to help me improve my classroom management. My Classroom Contracts even have the option of giving my students a voice.

Let Me Introduce Myself! - Get to know your gifted student

Regular education teachers are always getting forms and documents about their students with special needs, but they don't always get the same forms about their gifted/talented students they have on their roster. These students also have goals and needs that need to be met within the classroom. This is where "Let Me Introduce Myself" steps in! This information packet was designed to give your gifted student a chance to introduce themselves to their teacher(s). Students are able to talk about

UPDATED 5/18/2020: Now includes an interactive PDF (2 options) and a link to Google Slides.Transition is a HUGE part of a student's IEP planning - especially once he or she turns 14. As a high school special education teacher, I have always mapped out a transition plan for my students in grades 9 - 12 to follow. This plan made sure I was doing all that I could, during each grade level the student was in, to collect important transition information and to make sure I was meeting each student's

I have fallen down the Happy Planner hole and can't get out. Actually, I don't want to get out. I LOVE it! I love it so much, I've been doing something a little different this school year. I still keep track of IEP meetings using a binder, as well as my Google Drive, and I still record progress monitoring using a binder. I will never not use my binders, but I rarely bring them home. They're just too bulky... and at times way too heavy. Since my first year teaching I've always kept a small plann
