This 2025-2026 school year marks my 19th year in the classroom as a special education teacher. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to have experience teaching at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. I have been an emotional support teacher, a learning support teacher, and a co-teacher. I love creating resources for my classroom, that I can share here with all of you!

Once students turn 14 they are invited to their IEP meeting and take on more of an active/vocal role. They also start planning for their life after high school - otherwise known as transition. However, when I was an elementary learning support teacher, I felt like my students should have a voice in their IEP planning process, as well as start thinking about what they want to do/become when they are older. Yes, I did this even with third graders. Since my time as a learning support elementary t

A Brief Look Into Your Student's IEP | Elementary Special Education Resource

*UPDATED AUGUST 17TH, 2016* Out of ten years of teaching special education, this is a form I have been using for the past eight years to provide regular education teachers with as a brief look into their students' with IEPs information - whether it be the first day of school, after an IEP has been updated, or if a new student has been placed. I complete this form for each student and attach it to their IEP accommodation page(s), printed straight from their IEPs. This way the regular education

My students are made aware of our school district's policies at the beginning of the year. They know the rules, and they also know the consequences. Like other teachers, I have my own set classroom rules, but this year I decided to make and implement my own set of classroom contracts. Classroom Contracts are designed to really re-inforce policies I have for my classroom, and to help me improve my classroom management. My Classroom Contracts even have the option of giving my students a voice.

Let Me Introduce Myself! - Get to know your gifted student

Regular education teachers are always getting forms and documents about their students with special needs, but they don't always get the same forms about their gifted/talented students they have on their roster. These students also have goals and needs that need to be met within the classroom. This is where "Let Me Introduce Myself" steps in! This information packet was designed to give your gifted student a chance to introduce themselves to their teacher(s). Students are able to talk about

*UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2021* Now includes up to the 2024 - 2025 school year! While teaching at the 6th grade and up grade levels, nothing stressed my special education students – as well as myself – more than figuring out class schedules. The paper they receive on the first day of school telling them where to go and at what time is always overwhelming, especially for the sixth graders who never changed classes by a bell before. Fortunately as a case manager I have early access to their class schedu

Transition Tips & Tricks

Often times we think of the word "transition" as our special education students graduating high school and entering the real world. Over the years I've realized that's not the only "transition" my special education students make. We sometimes forget how overwhelming it can be for a student leaving the elementary and entering into the middle school. It can also be overwhelming for those older junior high students leaving their building and moving on to the high school. It's not only important to

Whether it be first thing in the morning during homeroom or at the very last few minutes of the day, students are constantly coming and going out of the classroom. Keeping track of where students are going once they leave the room is not only incredibly important, but also required by some schools. At my school we are required to turn in our sign-out sheets daily. Typical “sign-out sheets” usually only list the students name, the time they are leaving the room, and the time they have returned.
