Restaurant: En el restaurante. A speaking activity/project
This is a great activity to use with lower or higher levels of Spanish. The project is lined out in a step by step guide for the students, with the rubric on the back. I have used in both Spanish 2 and Spanish 3 classes.
Spanish 2: I gave them one day in class to prepare and then we did presentations the following day.
Spanish 3: I assigned a week ahead of time and required that they videotape the scene and post to a discussion board.

Sequencing of tenses in Spanish
After I have introduced the sequencing of tenses to students, I then use this PowerPoint as practice with whiteboards. It gives a recap of the various sequencing and then follows up with 12 sentences where the student must a) decide what tense should be used and b) then conjugate the verb appropriately.

Doctor/patient walk-around activity (Spanish)
A fun interpersonal communication activity for the novice or intermediate learner. There are a total of 36 cards: 18 doctor cards and 18 patient cards. The doctors must seek information from the patients to determine what is wrong and then, depending on the proficiency level of your students, can give commands (take aspirin, don't go to school, etc) or give recommendations (I want you to stay in bed...), or none at all if it is a novice student. ~There is a fun twist with some of the cards

Relative Pronouns / Los pronombres relativos
I was trying to figure out a way to systematically introduce relative pronouns to my students since it can be somewhat of an abstract concept (at least in their minds!). After doing lots of research, I put together this PPT to introduce the concept and used it over 5 days. Information Gap: La salud
Bill VanPatten states that best practices require students to DO something with the language, not just spit out robotic information. I created this info gap so that my students have to create with the language. Students must complete a task but have to use Spanish to get the information from their partner. La Casa - Real Estate Project (Spanish)
This wonderful project has students working collaboratively to sell a house that they have designed. Taking on the role of real estate agents, they must rely on their presentational and interpersonal speaking skills to complete the task. They will be asked questions by potential clients, so they need to be well prepared to make the sale. This activity could be used at all levels, however, I feel it is best for Intermediate level students.

El imperfecto del subjuntivo: Notes page/Graphic organizer
This is the notes page that I give my students. It introduces the imperfect subjunctive, provides an example, and gives the conjugations of all verbs. It is a very straightforward reference sheet for students. It does include the -ese form of the imperfect subjunctive, but only as reference to its use in literary works and more formal documents.

The Preterite Guide - A complete guide to the preterite
An all inclusive guide to the preterite including:
- regular
- car/gar/zar
- sandal verbs
- i - y verbs
- all irregulars, which includes cute names to help students remember them (there are 6 categories)

- verbs that change meaning in the preterite (includes examples in context)
- important information such as "no accents", "drops the i in third person..."

Practice with forming questions in Spanish
One of the things that I notice that the majority of Spanish students have trouble with is how to form a question in Spanish, especially when there is a preposition involved. So, I went old school to good old translations to help train their brain to think in Spanish and not English when forming questions. I created this quick practice sheet for them. Integrated Performance Assessment - Back to School (all levels)
This IPA follows ACTFL's guidelines. It incorporates 3 modes of communication: interpretive reading (IR), interpersonal communication (IC), and presentational writing (PW). It can be given at the beginning of the year to assess a student's proficiency in order to establish a benchmark from which to measure growth. Present vs Past: Clue/trigger words + quick practice

I have been doing IPAs since 2010. Once I did my first IPA, I was hooked and I have used them ever since. I worked previously in the business world for 17 years! That experience gives me the ability to know what motivates students and helps them to become passionate about Spanish. I feel that when students feel that they are "good" at something and are respected and valued, that they will embrace whatever I throw their way. I design my materials and activities to do just that - empower the student and show them that they can do it! What they give back to me is amazing....it validates my reason for becoming a teacher.
