Math Movie Review Activity: Mythbusters

STOP SEARCHING!!! Here is your answer to finding a school appropriate, math related movie and activity! My kids love earning a "free day" where we watch Mythbusters, as well as getting to tie in the other contents (Science, Writing, even Social Studies)! The note taking side is broken into 3 columns to help students practice note taking skills and stay organized. Students are also asked to identify key ways that math was used in each myth. On the back students are asked to pick

Assignment and Test Score Tracker

Here is an assignment/test score tracker that I use in my classroom. It is amazing for students who need to take responsibility for their learning and for those who enjoy watching their progression in class. I recommend printing a page for each content or standard to help students keep organized. I also like to print them on colored pages that coincide with the unit that I am teaching. I hope you find this resource helpful, but feel free to suggest any changes that may make this score tracker mo

Lesson Plan Template with Objective Builder and Learning Styles

I have spent two years looking over other templates, pulling key features, and adjusting them in order to save time, be practical, and efficient. While this is what I have come up with, please let me know if there is something you would like added or removed and I can modify the template for you! Thank you for considering this lesson plan, and please check out the other items in my store: Demystifying Math! Read any book on education or teaching and it will stress the importance of obje

Test Correction Form

Quiz corrections are a great way to provide students with feedback and build metacognition. In this form students identify what type of problem the question was (Mark Ups, 2 Step Equations, Adding Integers, etc.). Students are then asked to identify why they picked their choice, and what they think went wrong. I also ask students to identify the steps that they need to solve the problem correctly(repetition), and then lastly students rework the problem.

Fast Food Proportions

In this activity students simulate an order that they would place at a fast food restaurant. They then total up the calories, and create a proportion to find out how many hours of exercise/activity that they would have to complete in order to burn off all those calories! A list of popular items from Jack in the Box is included as well as a list of various activities!

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching middle grades since 2012. Before that I worked as a Paraprofessional in a 7/8 Resource/SPED class for 3 years prior to receiving my teacher certification. I am the Department Math Chair for my school, which allows me to participate in various professional developments such as an Intel Foundations of Mathematics Course, Icoach, Curriculum Adoptions, and Planning. I also teach math classes in our school's Saturday Academies(Test Prep/Interventions) and Summer School.

Teaching style

Many students see solving Math problems as a "Magic Trick" where the answers just appear fro thin air. Many learners struggle to see how the answer is created or the steps to get there. What I learned from working in a resource class is that you need to break down problems into a step by step process that is visual, uses metacognition, and can easily be replicated by students. These strategies are great for all learners, not just the ELLs, SPED, and falls far below students. I like to make sure my lessons and activities incorporate several learning styles (Visual, Linguistic/Verbal, Kinesthetic, Logical, Interpersonal/Cooperative Learning, Intrapersonal, Musical/Pattern, and Naturalistic). I feel that it is important to give students more that one way to access content and demonstrate their understanding, even in Math.

My own education history

I have received my Bachelor of Arts in Visual Effects and Graphics. A few years later I went to Rio Salado for my Post Baccalaureate in Secondary Mathematics, and I am currently working on a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.

Additional biographical information

I currently teach 7th grade Math, and 7th grade Advanced (Pre Algebra) classes in a Title 1 district. Many of my students struggle or have struggled with English language acquisition, which has caused them to fall below grade level in math. And while the neighborhood that the kids live in may be rough, there is a tight bond among the community that focuses on the students' education. Each student brings a unique set of challenges and experiences creating an amazing classroom full of diversity. I love working with these kids, their family, and guardians. Celebrating the growth that takes place, the jumps and connections that student the students make, is what makes teaching rewarding!
