I've created an anatomically correct heart "Valentine's" card for students to cut, color, and assemble. So that they can give away their card, there is an attached table for students to fill out with labeling, descriptions, and the pathway of blood. My students 7th-12th grade have enjoyed this activity each year!

Habitat Design Project

My 7th graders love creating new hands-on models! I've taken the traditional diorama assignment to a bit more advanced level so ensure my kiddos are genuinely learning the ecology concepts. I've designed this to be the final part of our "Design an Endangered Species Zoo", though it can be completed entirely on it's own. This project is designed to be an end-of-unit assessment that requires students to compile content and skills learned throughout the ecology lessons. Without expecting students

This activity was designed to be used as a review of major concepts covered in the first portion of a life science classroom. For example, my 7th graders complete this on the last day before our winter break. The questions cover the standards addressing taxonomy, cells, body systems, photosynthesis/cellular respiration, and cell reproduction.

GATTACA movie discussion questions

During my genetics unit with 7th and 9th graders I show the movie GATTACA (1997) to kick off a class discussion about ethical issues with genetics. Rather than have simple “are you watching” questions, I provide argument based questions to encourage students having passionate discussion in groups. After holding small group discussions during the movie, we hold a Socratic seminar the day after the movie so that students have time to share ideas and process opposing viewpoints.

This resource is designed to introduce seventh through nine grade students to the scientific method. Students work together to learn about experimental design, data collection and analysis using the 'work at your own pace' stations method. Each of my units has six assignments based on the following assignment types: Research, Data, Lab, Design, Explore, and Communicate.Because we're unsure how teaching in the near future will occur, I've included a plan for teaching this unit in the physical

Cake Core Sampling & Fossils

This foldable is designed to accompany a cake core sampling activity that students will do to investigate the relationship between layers of the earth and evidence for organisms changing over time. The instructions for the core sampling are intentionally quite vague so that the teacher has the freedom to choose the best fit for the group (whole cake, cupcakes, large groups, individuals, etc). This can easily be adapted to work with students from elementary through high school ages in a tradition

I've created a reflection page for students to document their learning after playing the Oh Deer! population game from Project WILD. Instructions for the game are not included but are easily found online. Playing the game typically takes about 20 minutes and simply requires a large space for students to run. This document includes space for students to record their observations, create a graph of results, and write an explanation using six key terms.

Focus Questions: Embryology

At the beginning of my unit, I have students read and discuss the focus questions they'll be examining during the lessons. They each have a copy in their notebook where they record initial ideas, thoughts, and inquiries about each focus question. At the end of the unit we revisit the page and discuss how their knowledge has changed. This product is the set of focus questions for the embryology unit.

Teaching style

As Ms. Frizzle says: Take Chances, Make Mistakes, Get Messy! She really is my hero and I strive to give my kids as many authentic, hands-on science experiences as possible. I want them to fall in love with the scientific process and constantly ask "but why? how? what happens next? what if?". The more they talk to each other, engage in debate, and offer new information they've found on their own, the better class it is!!
