To hold students accountable for their AR quizzes, I have students document the title and score they received. When they fill up a sheet, I send it home with a book mark or special prize to reward their hard work in reading. If they score below a 80% I also delete the quiz, have the student reread the book and retake the quiz.
Based on California Content Standards- blending and reading short and long vowel words. This is an excellent visual to refer to when teaching long and short vowel words. I always use my learning targets in the introduction and closing so students are aware of their focus for the lesson. All my activities, responses, information and questions revolve around this target and the focus of the students learning.
Unfortunately, many students do not have access to appropriate levels of books at home. To ensure these students are still reading at home, I send home a borrowed book bag which I discuss at Back to School night and/or conferences. Once a student brings the book bag back, I send home a new one. It allows students to pick independent readers from different genres and encourages them to read nightly.
