Everything you will need to teach pitch and frequency for sound. Three short lessons that introduce pitch. A fun, culminating activity in which student will create an instrument and explain how the rate of vibration changes the pitch. Comes with simple lessons, suggested inspirational video, student sheets, and scoring rubric.
Cover both technology and science standards in this engaging activity that can be implemented on your school grounds. Students will work in groups to photograph specified aspects of an ecosystem. They will then create a google presentation based on specified criteria. This comes complete with checklist for what to photograph, criteria for presentation and a simple scaled rubric. Students will recognize the roles of organisms and the energy that transfers through them.
Great introduction for food chains and roles of organisms. Touches on terms such as producers, consumers, and decomposers. Students are lead to 3 websites and required to write their thinking down as evidence.
Fill in the blank and extended response assessment. Students are required to both infer and apply their knowledge of the reflection and absorption of light energy. Scientific process standards are also addressed.
I love the book Because of Mr. Terrupt. I also have an ongoing poster of dollar words that kids add to as they discover them. However, I feel it's too difficult for them to find them without hints. These are 4 separate half sheets of Dollar Words. Each sheet has ten word on them. The beginning letter and a small hint is provided. I give out one per week and students work on them with extra time. They love it. Simple, fun, ongoing activity to supplement the book. Complete with answer key
It's sometimes difficult to find hands on lab experiments to go along with an ecosystems and food webs unit. Through the scientific process, students will observe the affects of sugar water, salt water and vinegar water on plant growth. You can choose to set it up as one observation in front of class or allow small groups to have a set of 4 plants. I usually use simple grass seed or a bean sprout. At the end of the experiment, students will explain the effects of plant elimination within a f
I've always struggled with "at home science experiments". This activity breaks it down into an easy to follow form for both parents and students. After modeling in class with simple experiments, I allow the students to try. I suggest approving each student's idea with you before giving the go ahead. I assign one of these each quarter and the kids really look forward to them. It's a great way to fit in the science inquiry and investigations standards. Comes with easy to use, quick scoring ru
(Hold off on buying until I find updated website)Everything you will need to teach an interactive, concise unit on sound. Complete with a self directed WebQuest, Create an instrument activity, Study guide chart and two unit quizzes. My students love this unit and I've bundled everything about this unit into one place here. The sound WebQuest is my best selling item and now it can be bought at a discount with the other materials in this unit.
Students have problems estimating heights. This project is complete with a suggested single website which they will use to locate information about the skyscrapers of Cleveland. This can be used as a sample to complete together before researching your city's skyscrapers or as a self-directed activity. Students not only report the height in meters and feet, but they become familiar with how many meters/feet make up a floor. The students will also be required to list additional information on
Divide your class into groups, give them a bag of Valentine Candy Hearts, and let them explore. This activity covers several topics like fractions, percents, graphs, line plots, measurement and estimation. It's self directed and fun. Based on common core standards for 3-6 grade.
I used to only have students create an instrument that can change pitch as a project, but this is better. Student's have their choice of 5 different projects that cover different sound standards. I tried to create a simple, two sided sheet that incorporated all elements of the project including directions, a student table and scoring rubric. I have used this as a home project as well as an in-school STEM project.
My students love putting their knowledge to use in this fun wrap up activity on ecosystems. Working cooperatively, they create board games about various topics learned in our fifth grade life science unit. Combined with the idea of reducing and reusing waste, they get creative in bringing home materials from home. If you happen to have a document camera, we've also created short youtube videos demonstrating how to play the game.
Simple project to do with Smarties. Students will convert to fraction, then decimal (rounded to nearest hundredth), then percent. We use a geometry template to create the circle graph.
Simple one page sheet to get your students up and measuring with a partner. Students will be required to measure in both metric and customary units to find linear, area and volume measurements in their classroom. Cooperative, hands-on and simple to get them thinking about measurement.
