SRCS (rhymes with sharks) stands for Summary, Reaction, Connection, Sketch. This packet allows you to decide the chunks of chapters for each SRCS and provides space for students to answer the questions you develop and to keep track of characters. It is a great way to make sure students are engaging with the text and allows you the flexibility to customize the focus question for a given section. I also use SRCS for class discussions and literature circles.

I've used this reading log with my 7th and 8th grade classes for 2 years. It forces students to think and write about what they read each week but is really easy to grade. I developed "SRCS" (rhymes with sharks) as a way to engage my students with the text on multiple levels. This version has a sample at the beginning and then 3 weeks of blank logs afterward.

This is the end of text reading comprehension I've used with students the past 2 years with 7th and 8th graders.
