Procedural (How-to) Writing Project Grades 3-6

This really is an Essential Supplemental. When looking for procedural writing resources that modeled procedural writing, I was at a loss. I decided to create my own and it turned out to be a great project this year. The final project is for students to create their own procedural writing slides. Students completed their projects using Google Slides. However, the download included is a powerpoint. Included in your download is an 11 slide sample project (How to Teach Your Dog to Sit). You w

Probability with Starbursts

This Essential Supplemental has always been a favorite activity for my students. I have used this activity in both 3rd and 5th grade math classes. I have included teacher notes of suggested set up and possible extensions. In this activity students work in pairs, taking turns pulling out starbursts from a brown paper bag. They tally the results and make predictions of how many of each color are in their bag based on their pulls. Students convert their tallies into fractions, add fractions, a

Biography Report

This Essential Supplemental includes a sample mini-biography, biography note taking packet, biography checklist, and template. The kids loved researching a famous person and creating their own mini-biography. I had students hand write their notes/research. I made the template a shared google document for them to copy, rename, and word process their final copy. This will be a printable template but you can easily copy and paste into a google document if you wish. An extension for this proje

Adding Money Holiday Wish Book

This Essential Supplemental is always a favorite math activity before Christmas. Students who don't celebrate Christmas have an alternate cover that simply says "My Wish Book" that can be used for any holiday celebrated in which presents are given. Students cut out items they wish for and glue them down in their wish book. I send home a letter in early November asking for holiday catalogs. I also allow students to find and print items online. They need to show their work and correctly add the

Reflection Form for End of 1st Quarter/Trimester and Conference Use

This Essential Supplemental has served as a great reflection piece for students, important information for me, and something that parents appreciate receiving at conferences. Beyond the assessing, parents also want to know who their child sits with at lunch, what they play on recess, and what they perceive as strengths and areas of need. I always include this in my conference folder to share with parents. I find it all to be useful information, a great opportunity for reflection and essential

Descriptive Writing - Gourds

This Essential Supplemental is a classroom favorite every year. It is a great fall writing project. You will have to buy a gourd for each student in your classroom but it is well worth it. Included in this download is a descriptive packet that students fill out about their gourd. You will also find a sample leads/conclusion page, editing/revision checklist, rough and final draft paper, and a sample to share with students. I had students complete their final draft on a google doc this year a

Reading Journal (IDR Journal)

This Essential Supplemental works out great as an in-class reading journal/reflection tool. I've found that at times students need more accountability for their IDR (Individualized Daily Reading) time, especially if I am working with a small group or conferencing during this period. This journal holds students accountable while strengthening reading skills. For each daily IDR period a student needs to fill in the date, title, author, pages read that day, and reflect on their reading with eit

Reading Conference Form

This Essential Supplemental works in tandem with the IDR (Individualized Daily Reading Log) that I also have in my store. However, you don't have to use them together. This conference form download is a great way to quickly assess how your students are performing with their reading. It's kind of like a mini running record using texts within their lexile range. The second page of the conference form can be used to write a goal for the student to work toward and assess the effort being put int

Reading Log Bookmark

This Essential Supplemental is an option for at-home reading. I used it with my 3rd graders for the first time last year, and it was a success. Included in the download you will find a sample letter to parents explaining the bookmark procedures, sample of a completed weekly bookmark, and a blank bookmark. I kept a box for blank reading bookmarks and a box for students to turn in their completed reading bookmarks on my desk (I just decorated tissue boxes). We have ROAR slips at our school (PBI

Beginning of the year community building

This free Essential Supplemental, is a great beginning of the year activity to build a sense of community and serve as a writing inspiration for students. The downloaded direction page for parents should ideally be sent home at an open house or within the first few weeks of school. Students decorate a boy/girl template with interests and/or accomplishments. Once all student templates are stapled up on a bulletin board it looks like they are holding hands in unity, yet each one is unique. The

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching in a suburban public school district for 18 years. I taught 3rd grade for 15 years and am currently teaching 3rd grade. I taught 5th grade for a total of 3 years.

Teaching style

My primary goal is for students to enjoy coming to school. If kids arent' in the right frame of mind or don't feel like they are in a safe and positive environment, they will have trouble engaging in the classroom. I remember not wanting to go to school at times when I was growing up. I don't want my students to ever feel like that. From the start of the year, I foster a safe and positive learning environment through activities, sharing, and modeling of citizenship. I am always looking for new and creative ways to engage my students. That's why I love shopping on TPT. There are a lot of great ideas to be shared! In the classroom, I believe it is important to balance fundamental skills with workshop.

My own education history

I earned my undergraduate degree from Marquette University with a double major in English Literature and Communications and Rhetorical Studies. I earned my teaching certification from Cardinal Stritch University. I also earned my Master's Degree in Professional Development from Cardinal Stritch University.

Additional biographical information

I am married and have a son in middle school. The other two members of my family are my Lab/Cattle dog mix named Chase and my Australian Shepherd/Poodle mix, Daisy.
