The lesson incorporates guided practice problems where students can come to the Smart Board to show their work and explain their rationale.

This activity can be done individually or with a partner. Post the questions around the classroom. Have each student visit each problem, solve it, and record their answer. At the conclusion of the activity, I reveal the answers on the Smart Board so students can check their work and ask questions if necessary. This interactive Smart Board lesson introduces the basics of square roots, and works its way up to evaluating expressions within a radical, solving radical equations, approximating square roots to the nearest integer without a calculator, and simplifying both numerical and variable expressions in a radical. As a bonus there is a video of the new Kumanjaro ride linked to one of the slides with a square root word problem. The students loved it and it really brought square roots to life for them.
