I have taught middle school math, including Algebra, for 20 years. I worked in Michigan at Norup Middle School, with the Berkley School District for 8 years. I then taught 2 years in Palo Alto, California at Jordan Middle School. The past 10 years I have taught at Woodland Middle School in Brentwood, Tennessee. I graduated in 1993 from Michigan State University with a degree in Elementary Education, with minors in math and science. I then earned a Master's Degree in Middle School Curriculum at Eastern Michigan University, in 1998.
The teacher posts 6 different sheets around the room. Each sheet has two examples of direct or inverse proportions, either a graph, a table or an equation. The teacher places students into 6 different groups. Students fill-in the student page, drawing the table, equation and sketch of the graph, label it as direct or inverse, and explain how they know it is direct or inverse. I usually start with 3 minutes for the first station and then give the students 2- 2 1/2 minutes for each additional
This is the second set of Common Core Practice Assessment Tasks.
In task 3, Suzie's Savings Account, students use their knowledge of unit rate, slope, constant rate of change, proportions, graphs, and intervals to answer this CRA task.
In task 4, The Donut Den, students use their knowledge of equations, unit rates, variables and solving equations to complete these tasks.
2 Common Core Practice Tasks that focus on unit rate, proportions, proportional relationships, tables. The two tasks are Gasoline Prices, and Reading for Fun.
I have the students complete these and then compare responses written by classmates or peers. Without showing names, I use examples of student work that are missing information, or labels, etc. and work that have met all the requirements. Students share constructive criticism to help one another perform better on the actual CRA Common
Students use the coordinates of two points to write the equation of a line in all 3 forms: slope-intercept, point-slope, and standard form. Students graph the liner equation. Students then write equations of lines that are parallel and perpendicular to the orgininal line and compare and contrast the graphs and equations of each type of line. Parallel lines have the same slope and different y-intercepts. Perpendicular lines slopes are negative reciprocals of eachother.
Students explore the graphs of quadratic equations using a graphing calculator. Students describe the relationship between the graph and the equation, I use this as an introduction to graphing quadratics to see if the students can discover relationships between graphs and equations.
Students create a table and graph a pair of absolute value equations on the same coordinate system. Then students compare and contrast each graph.

Teaching style
I try to mix up my activities to reach/teach different learning styles. I am big on using different colors to show my steps, when working out problems or graphs. My former students tell me how helpful this was to their learning of the concepts being presented.
