Quest- Metric Missions- Fortify the Fortress! Use a ruler to measure length!

Challenge your students to use their wits and their rulers to measure replacement scientific tools, swords, shields, and fortress walls in this Metric Mission for the quantity of Length! Your learners have four different difficulty options to allow for differentiation as they must follow measurement directions. Their goal is to recreate the image of a beaker, flask, shield, sword, pair of swords, or castle walls using units of centimeters! This serves as a great activity that can be linked to an

Quest- Escape the Golem! An Avg. Speed & Position versus Time Graphing Activity!

Your students have awoken a mighty stone Golem in the game world of Aureus Imperium and Einstein fears he is not fast enough to escape it! Your students will collect position and time data from the Golem and an ally who volunteers to help distract the creature before it crushes them! From this data, the groups of students will create position versus time graphs and calculate the average speed of the volunteer and the Golem. From this information they will be able to determine if Einstein has the

Quest- The Slender Strangers, A Graphing and Scatter Plot Activity

Over 25 sold! Have your students create scatterplots to discover the correlation between height and wingspan! Do your students need help collecting data and making scatter plots in an engaging way? I present the quest of the Slender Strangers! In this activity, students are challenged by using a meter stick to determine if human wingspan is related to height. They then use this data to construct a scatter plot to determine if there is a relationship of not. In the game story setting, student g

Quest- Da Vinci and His Fiery Wheels! A Position v. Time Graph Lab Activity!

Your students have been summoned by Lord Da Vinci to inspect his newest invention in the game world of Aureus Imperium. Da Vinci has created some automobiles that have very "hot wheels" and your students have been tasked to use them to study motion. Your class will work in groups to determine how changing a track's ramp height impacts its movement. Using toy cars, track, textbooks, clay, a stopwatch, and a meter stick, they will calculate average speed / average velocity and build position vers

Quest- Metric Missions- Reading a Graduated Cylinder

Challenge your students to record the volume of objects from graduated cylinder readings. Within the game world storyline, Einstein has locked away a Sir Isaac Newton's armor in a safe. In order to find the safe's combination, students will take their values from the graduated cylinder readings. This quest includes three separate variations for differentiation. Students can jig-saw the different versions as a group to solve the puzzle. Can your students unlock the safe?! Students will be able to

Quest- The Skulip Grower, A Graphing Comprehensive Activity with 4 Graph Types

A quest that covers 4 different graph types with one activity! Use as a formative or summative assessment to engage your class with its strange premise! Ever need an engaging activity that promotes students to collect data and then use that data to generate bar graphs, pie graphs, line graphs, and scatter plots? Need an activity that has a Halloween theme that reviews some basic tenets on measuring and graphing? Look no further! I present the Skulip Grower Quest! In this activity students will

Quest- Scaling Tornadoes, A Cross-Curricular Proportion Activity on Tornadoes!

If your students are like my students, my children, and even me, it can be difficult to imagine the awesome scale and size of a tornado! Viral video clips and aftermath photographs don't give justice to the monstrous size of these natural phenomena. When working with tornado-related concepts, it is important that students understand how tornadoes are ranked and how large they can be. These concepts could even be the difference between life and death if students find themselves in the path of a t

Quest- Metric Missions- That Equals What?

Challenge your students to review length, mass, and volume with the metric system in this race against the clock to save a poisoned Sir Isaac Newton! In this quest, students must complete three stations; one for length, one for mass, and one for volume. At each station, students review the basic units and tools for measuring that quantity while also comparing the English unit with the Metric unit for that quantity. Students who achieve this in shorter amounts of time earn additional extra credit

Triple Beam Balance Practice

Challenge your students to record the mass of objects from triple beam balance readings. This includes three different versions of worksheets that have ten questions each. This is a perfect addition to a metric system station lab activity or a quick review! Students will be able to demonstrate skills related to these learning targets: I can use tools to measure and describe the quantity of mass.I can use a triple beam balance to find the mass of an object.Within this download you will get the s

Quest- Metric Missions- Grateful for Grams!

Challenge your students to use different balances and discover the importance of standardized units like grams for the mass of objects. Sir Isaac Newton and an engineer are having difficult raising supplies up to a watchtower. The rope, which is designated to handle lifting crates of a specific size, keeps snapping despite the engineer's measurements. Students will use an equal arm balance to measure five objects of your choosing with a non-standard unit, a hexagonal nut. They will then make pre

Teaching style

For the last seven years I have created and implemented a Game-Based design approach to 8th grade general science. In addition to this, I have utilized Universal Design protocols and have incorporated aspects of the Flipped Classroom as well. My approach to education focuses on kinesthetic learners with project-based approaches. Underlying PBIS initiatives have been employed in my classroom as a companion to my teaching style.

Awards & shining teacher moments

2016 William's Teacher of the Year Award from Wilmington City Schools.

Additional biographical information

See what my current students are using on my weebly site at hellmund.weebly.com. This is the main resource they use for their 8th grade science game curriculum where students have created gamertags, character avatars, earn gold, have life points, and earn experience for the work they do! They can view the shop where they can spend gold for game cards and so much more! My pinterest can be found at: www.pinterest.com/HellmundScience I post examples of student work and things I have incorporated into my gamified curriculum.
