The categories range from simple and concrete (car, train, plane, boat, taxi = transportation) to more abstract (firetruck, apple, strawberries, rose, heart = things that are red).
I created this worksheet for a group of my sixth grade students, so there are some categories of specific interest to them (rappers, hockey teams, movies).

This worksheet raises students' awareness of the prefixes in-, im-, ir-, and il-. Students segment the prefix from the base word. After the writing task, my students discuss the meaning of each word. We discuss how the prefixes mean "not" or "the opposite of."
2nd - 5th
English Language Arts, Speaking & Listening, Vocabulary
Students increase awareness of the prefix dis- by segmenting dis- from base words. Next, students explore the meaning of each word by writing it in a sentence.
Picture board game with a variety of pictures of items that go together in different ways (category, function, location, attribute, etc.). Use chips or laminate and use dry erase markers to choose two (or more!) items and explain how they go together. These pictures were chosen so that there are many combinations! This can also be used to target following directions.
