I taught Math my first year (00-01) and have been teaching 7th Grade Science ever since... and I absolutely love it! Our school is currently aligning our lessons to the new NGSS curriculum! I love the 5E approach as well as presenting lessons that are 3 dimensional. I am a former ASB advisor and a former Tech Coordinator. I have attended many conferences and workshops with the intention of looking for better and more interesting lessons. I have completed two years of character education training and was a coach/mentor for the teachers at my school that were going through their first year of character education training. I am working on becoming a Google Certified Teacher.

Mapping the Ring of Fire Worksheet with keys for Earthquakes and Volcanoes.
This is great worksheet to show students how a seismologist would collect seismic data and plot the coordinates on a map. The coordinates map out the boundaries of the Ring of Fire. You might have to spend a little time teaching the students how to read longitude and latitude but if they have had any experience graphing coordinates in Math then it shouldn't be too difficult. Microscope Lab Intro - Letter 'e' and Colored Threads w/ Key
This is the lab that I use to introduce the light microscope. The first part of the lab focuses on the proper procedures of using a microscope. Each student has to fill out the procedures section before they can start working on the field of view drawings. Invertebrate Dichotomous Key Worksheet with 14 Animals
You can use this activity to introduce or reinforce the learning of a Dichotomous Key. Each student picks their own animal and they must identify the animal using the Invertebrate Dichotomous Key. When they have identified their animal, they can make a double bubble map comparing and contrasting their animal with a different animal from a classmate. Microscope Lab #4 Pond Water
This is my favorite microscope lab because the students really get to see organisms swimming around in the water. I ask the students to bring in water samples from water sources around their neighborhood. Make sure to tell them that you don't want a water sample from the gutter. I have a digital microscope that I use to project the images on my overhead screen. There is nothing better than seeing a 3 foot long mosquito larva projected on the overhead screen!!! Crime Scene DNA Fingerprinting Lab with Key for Bar Codes
This is one of my favorite activities! The students really have a lot of fun with this lesson. After a brief talk about how the DNA in each of us is different, I relate that to how each food item has a different bar code as well. I use bar codes (DNA samples) and place them around my room on various objects. The students have to match the DNA sample (bar code) with the bar codes on their paper to see which perpetrator was at that particular crime scene. You can change the names on the bar code s

Gummy Bear (or Worms) 'Osmosis or Diffusion?' Lab
This is a fun lab for students to explore the process of osmosis. They love this lab because they get to use Gummy Bears (or Gummy Worms if you like or both), even though they cannot eat them (I usually buy extra gummy bears so they can eat them the next day when they do their second observations) and they get to use the lab equipment, such as the Triple Beam Balance. I use this fun worksheet as a reinforcement tool for the functions of the organelles inside of a cell. Microscope Lab #3 Plant Cell and Animal Cell
Students will be able to compare onion cells to cheek cells in this microscope lab. The students have already completed microscope lab #2 so they are familiar with making their own slide. I first make sure that I get parent permission because each student will be scraping the inside of their mouths to get cheek cells. Microscope Lab - Wet Mount Slide
After the students have completed the first microscope lab, then they get to learn how to make their own slide. I give each student a piece of newspaper or a page from a phone book, and they cut out a very small letter (as small as they can anyways). Drawing the Cell Cycle Worksheet w/ Key
The students draw the 6 main steps of Mitotic Cell Division. Interphase, Mitosis, which is comprised of 4 phases, and Cytokinesis. Students will color code the different parts, such as the nuclear membrane and chromosomes, and then label the major event that happens in each step. Beetle Chromosome Study Worksheet
Each student is given a different karyotype. Based on that karyotype, and the table of mutations, the student draws a beetle with the listed mutations. There are 8 different karyotypes so you will have 8 differently mutated beetles. This activity covers karyotypes, mutations, genotype, and phenotype. Teaching style
I really like the NGSS 5E approach (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate). I like presenting a phenomenon and then let the students explore. I also like that they get to figure things out first before I have to guide and explain. I am comfortable with a loud class as long as the noise stems from cooperative group work and collaboration.

I was teacher of the year for the 1516 school year... but my real reward is having my students come back and tell me how much my class has helped them in High School! : )

I originally wanted to be a veterinarian but found out through tutoring Biology and Chemistry at UNR that I really enjoyed working with the other students instead!! Teaching is definitely my calling!!
