A quick and easy way to reinforce lessons on the elements of narrative - specifically the 4 main types of conflict.
This one page worksheet includes 20 examples/scenerios that the students must classify as either:
man vs man (or person vs person)
man vs nature
man vs self
man vs society
Includes answer sheet.
This 17 slide PowerPoint presentation serves as a useful overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder. I use this to help students understand the main character, Christopher, in the novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime". The presentation discusses the symptoms, when they manifest, strengths and difficulties that a person on the spectrum deals with. In the lesson, it's important to emphasis that Autism is a spectrum and so every person's experience is going to be unique, and that the
After learning about a variety of common advertising techniques (scare tactics, happy family, ideal kids, bandwagon, celebrity endorsement, and emotional appeal), I use this file as a review and evaluation of student understanding.
The file includes 8 magazine ads that students will use to identify and discuss the various advertising techniques identified above. some are easy, some will take more thought. Each slide has the answer(s) in the 'notes' section for the teacher to use as an answer ke
This file includes a 2-page article (889 words) outlining some basics of surviving a zombie apocalypse, along with a set of 10 questions to gauge reading comprehension. Teacher answer sheet is included, also.
The reading is a fun and engaging article that can be used to evaluate reading speed, accuracy, and comprehension.
I always have great student reactions to this particular article!

Use the Simpsons to engage students while introducing or re-inforcing lessons on the 1920s and prohibition.
This is one of my favourite lessons "add-ons" and the kids love it too! This file contains questions and an answer sheet for the Simpsons' episode "Homer vs The Eighteenth Ammendment" (Simpsons season 8, episode 18) The questions deal with specifics of government, how people circumvented the law, communication of the time, etc.
When Prohibition hits the town of Springfield Homer goes int
This 13 slide power point presentation looks at implicit (implied) messages that can be found in Disney movies.
The file looks at gender roles, male and female ideals of beauty, sexuality, and representations of good and evil.
In my grade 12 media unit I focus on various implied messages that can be present in a variety of media. My intention is not to bash Disney, but to make students conscious of potential messages and to be aware of the possible impact they could have on viewers.

A simple worksheet that requires students to break down an excerpt of the balcony scene to understand the meaning of the passage in general and each line specifically.
It also asks students to identify similes, metaphors and personification in the scene.
This is a worksheet, examples, and a quiz/assignment/assessment that I put together for a grade 12 course (HSB4M: Introduction to Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology)
After teaching them the basics of Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning I give them the examples to work through in pairs or groups and take them up as a class.
The quiz/assessment worked well for all levels of ability in the class.
It was one of the student's favourite units in the course.
Includes answer keys.
I generally use this 6 page file to re-inforce students' knowledge of the parts of a newspaper article (5Ws 1H, lead, headline, byline, structure, etc.
Includes a 2 page checklist that can be copied for the students or used as a note. For lower ability students I turn it into a fill-in-the blank note by simply eliminating high-value words, copying and having students fill in the blanks as I walk through the note.
This file also contains 2 activities to further work with the writing form.

I love this activity to generate interest in the novel! It is also a great way to teach or reinforce important pre-reading techniques.
Using several different covers from various publications of this novel, students work in groups and as a class to make predictions about what the novel is about.
This lesson / activity can be easily modified for your class goals, needs, and abilities. It allows students to work together in a loosely structured way that doesn't feel like work!

I use this in my Grade 11 Introduction to Law course as a way to get students to consider what rules/laws are/need to be in place for people to live in relative peace and safety.
I begin with showing the first episode of Gilligan's Island to set the mood and to get them in the right frame of mind.
I then have groups develop the laws they think will be necessary for their own survival on a dessert island.
It amazes me the variation of laws they come up with, from food sharing to toilet habits
This is a quick and easy template for students to follow when writing the all-important cover letter. It is a simple fill in the blanks to be used after students have seen examples of the real thing.
There is also a checklist that students find useful. It helps them ensure all aspects are included before handing in the final copy of their letter.
This file includes 2 activities based on the film Stand By Me. The first activity introduces entertainment value - what it is and the different ways in which a film creates it (humour, action, tension, the unexpected)
The second activity is a set of viewing questions. This 2 page, 14 question, worksheet requires reviewing sections of the film (clearly identified on worksheet)
This is a very popular activity with students of all levels.
Students must argue their choice for who is MOST responsible for the baroness' death: Baron, mad man, friend, boat man, baroness.
I often will have the groups work towards a concensus then take a vote for most responsible. I like to walk the students through each character and act as devil's advocate to get them thinking about all angles. Students have the opportunity to get in their thoughts as well. At the end I take another vote t
A well known short story by a New Zealand author, "The Fat Boy" by Owen Marshall always creates debate and discussion with high school students of all levels.
The story of a town that blames all its ills on an imaginary "fat boy" the story can be used with several different grade levels and ability levels.
This file contains the complete short story, two vocabulary activities (definition from dictionary and from context), a cloze reading activity (ready to print), a fun and creative activity
The nature vs nurture (genes vs environment) debate is a staple of social science courses.
This package includes 3 articles on the issues of nature/nurture, an overhead transparency master with break down of debate and mini-activities for students, assignment for work with articles(in groups) and 2 writing assignments. There is also a page on Harry Harlow and his monkey experiments in the 50s for extension.
I used this in a grade 12 course called "Society: Challenge and Change" and a grade 11
A diamond 9 is a great way to introduce students to a topic. Each diamond has a statement related to the topic about to be studied; the students must rearrange the statements putting those they MOST agree with at the top and those they LEAST agree with at the bottom. There is one blank diamond that requires the students to write their own statement.
The goal is to generate thought and discussion on the topic before you begin a unit. At the end of the unit, you can do this same activity. Student

Experience
I am wrapping up my second decade teaching at the high school level in Ontario, Canada.
My subjects include junior and senior English, a variety of Social Science courses and Canadian Law.
Teaching style
Every class is different, and I adjust my methods accordingly. Regardless of all other factors, I strive to treat each student with respect and to approach each day with a sense of humour.
My own education history
I completed a 2 year diploma program at Sheridan College in Oakville and spent 2 years as a travel agent before deciding that I was not cut out for the world of sales.
I returned to uni at 23 attending the University of Waterloo. I achieved my BA English Literature with Honours and went on to the University of Auckland in New Zealand to do my BEd.
I returned to my home town and am currently teaching at my old high school side by side with some of my former teachers! (It only took my 3 months to call them by their first names!)
