This file includes a 2-page article (889 words) outlining some basics of surviving a zombie apocalypse, along with a set of 10 questions to gauge reading comprehension. Teacher answer sheet is included, also.

Second Hand Lions Film Study Questions and Viewing Test
This is a set of questions for the first half of the film including a writing activity.
Also included is a final test (viewing) in a film study unit. Specific scenes throughout the film are examined(each one has the time stamp for easy location on the DVD).
Material covered include different angles, shots, and camera movement as well as plot, character and setting.

WWII Exceptional Person or Event Research Project
I use this assignment with my CHC2P (Grade 10 Canadian History) class but it would work for non-Canadian classes as well. Use the Simpsons to engage students while introducing or re-inforcing lessons on the 1920s and prohibition.
This is one of my favourite lessons "add-ons" and the kids love it too! Messages in Media (Gender Stereotypes in Disney)
This 13 slide power point presentation looks at implicit (implied) messages that can be found in Disney movies.
The file looks at gender roles, male and female ideals of beauty, sexuality, and representations of good and evil.
In my grade 12 media unit I focus on various implied messages that can be present in a variety of media. My intention is not to bash Disney, but to make students conscious of potential messages and to be aware of the possible impact they could have on viewers.

MLA Citation Practice
This is a great follow-up to lessons on MLA citations. The worksheet has students creating MLA bibliographical and in-text citations for a series of random facts from the internet. This worksheet gives students a random fact (about Dr. Seuss, elephants, Al Capone, etc) in a sentence or two. For each fact there is the (live) web link to the source of the information. Students must create a works cited/bibliographic citation and then use that to add an in-text citation to the random fact itself.

The Woman In Gold: The story of Maria Altmann's eight-year fight to reclaim 'Woman in Gold', a Klimt painting stolen from her family by the Nazis. Fingerprint Challenge - Law (CLU3M / CLN4U) - Forensics
Groups as large or as small as you like supply fingerprints from each member creating a set of CLUES, SUSPECTS, and an answer sheet. CLUE and SUSPECT sheets are traded with another group and then each sets out to match the CLUE print with the SUSPECT print.
This is a fun game to play to introduce students to the basics of forensics and evidence collection. I use with my grade 11 and grade 12 law students and they love the slightly competitive nature of it, as well as getting to 'play.'

Classical and Operant Conditioning
This is a worksheet, examples, and a quiz/assignment/assessment that I put together for a grade 12 course (HSB4M: Introduction to Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology)
After teaching them the basics of Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning I give them the examples to work through in pairs or groups and take them up as a class.
The quiz/assessment worked well for all levels of ability in the class.
It was one of the student's favourite units in the course.

Exceptional Person/Event WWII Research Report (CHC2D)
In this assignment, students research an exceptional person or event from WWII and write a research report that explains their significance and contribution to the war effort. Newspaper Article - basic parts
I generally use this 6 page file to re-inforce students' knowledge of the parts of a newspaper article (5Ws 1H, lead, headline, byline, structure, etc.
Includes a 2 page checklist that can be copied for the students or used as a note. For lower ability students I turn it into a fill-in-the blank note by simply eliminating high-value words, copying and having students fill in the blanks as I walk through the note.
This file also contains 2 activities to further work with the writing form.

Experience
I am wrapping up my second decade teaching at the high school level in Ontario, Canada.
My subjects include junior and senior English, a variety of Social Science courses and Canadian Law.
Teaching style
Every class is different, and I adjust my methods accordingly. Regardless of all other factors, I strive to treat each student with respect and to approach each day with a sense of humour.
My own education history
I completed a 2 year diploma program at Sheridan College in Oakville and spent 2 years as a travel agent before deciding that I was not cut out for the world of sales.
I returned to uni at 23 attending the University of Waterloo. I achieved my BA English Literature with Honours and went on to the University of Auckland in New Zealand to do my BEd.
I returned to my home town and am currently teaching at my old high school side by side with some of my former teachers! (It only took my 3 months to call them by their first names!)
