This 17 slide PowerPoint presentation serves as a useful overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder. I use this to help students understand the main character, Christopher, in the novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime". The presentation discusses the symptoms, when they manifest, strengths and difficulties that a person on the spectrum deals with. In the lesson, it's important to emphasis that Autism is a spectrum and so every person's experience is going to be unique, and that the

I use this assignment with my CHC2P (Grade 10 Canadian History) class but it would work for non-Canadian classes as well. Rather than writing a full research report or essay, students create a profile of their chosen person or event using information from their research (as well as creating MLA works cited page and using in-text citations). It is a fully self-contained Google Slides deck that includes the assignment sheet, rubric, research notes page, works cited page (with MLA guide) and profi

This file contains questions and an answer sheet for the Simpsons' episode "Homer vs The Eighteenth Ammendment" (Simpsons season 8, episode 18) The questions deal with specifics of government, how people circumvented the law, communication of the time, etc. When Prohibition hits the town of Springfield Homer goes int

This 13 slide power point presentation looks at implicit (implied) messages that can be found in Disney movies. The file looks at gender roles, male and female ideals of beauty, sexuality, and representations of good and evil. In my grade 12 media unit I focus on various implied messages that can be present in a variety of media. My intention is not to bash Disney, but to make students conscious of potential messages and to be aware of the possible impact they could have on viewers. Stude

This is a great follow-up to lessons on MLA citations. The worksheet has students creating MLA bibliographical and in-text citations for a series of random facts from the internet. This worksheet gives students a random fact (about Dr. Seuss, elephants, Al Capone, etc) in a sentence or two. For each fact there is the (live) web link to the source of the information. Students must create a works cited/bibliographic citation and then use that to add an in-text citation to the random fact itself.

The Woman In Gold: The story of Maria Altmann's eight-year fight to reclaim 'Woman in Gold', a Klimt painting stolen from her family by the Nazis. This movie is an excellent addition to your WWII/Holocaust units. A recent film (2015), it shows the hardships and discrimination of the early days of the Holocaust through flashbacks to the main character's youth in Austria. It also shows students how the events of so long ago are still impacting lives today. The worksheet is 2 pages of questions (fi

Experience

I am wrapping up my second decade teaching at the high school level in Ontario, Canada. My subjects include junior and senior English, a variety of Social Science courses and Canadian Law.

Teaching style

Every class is different, and I adjust my methods accordingly. Regardless of all other factors, I strive to treat each student with respect and to approach each day with a sense of humour.

My own education history

I completed a 2 year diploma program at Sheridan College in Oakville and spent 2 years as a travel agent before deciding that I was not cut out for the world of sales. I returned to uni at 23 attending the University of Waterloo. I achieved my BA English Literature with Honours and went on to the University of Auckland in New Zealand to do my BEd. I returned to my home town and am currently teaching at my old high school side by side with some of my former teachers! (It only took my 3 months to call them by their first names!)
