One thing I have learned during my 18 years of teaching is that I am never satisfied with my classroom layout. Every year I change a little bit here or there, trying to find that perfect placement for every piece of furniture in my room. Since I am no body builder, I would rather arrange things on paper first, before I start moving heavy furniture around. I put together this Classroom Layout Kit for that specific purpose. I have included all that you will need to begin planning your classroom la

During the holiday season my students and I research Christmas and holiday traditions from around the world. This is a great way to explore various cultures and to brush up on our world geography. I created this simple project form as a way for the children to document the information they find. I love using literacy and math workstations as a way for students to independently practice skills we cover in class. These quick and easy stations provide a multitude of activities from which students can choose, which allows for easy differentiation. To help my students keep track of their progress in workstations, I developed this one-page checklist. It gives the students space to check off the stations as they visit them. It also provides a behavior/work habit analysis for each day's station

First days are hectic enough without wondering how little Billy Bob is getting home or whether or not Sally Sue can eat the el-cheapo snack you brought in for the class. That's where the First Day Student Information Sheet comes in handy. Most schools have either a Preview or Meet & Greet Night where students can see the classroom, meet the teacher, and drop off non-existent supplies. Debbie Diller's "work station" concept is one of the best ways to balance small groups and independent learning in the elementary classroom. Based on the ideas from her book, I designed several components to help me manage work stations in my room. Included in this packet (12 pages) are the following: - a sample, one-week, four-group schedule complete with 6 work stations - a sheet for students to track which activities they have completed - "I Can" sheets for each of the

Work Stations, as described by Debbie Diller, are a great way to provide independent practice for your students at their individual levels. While many of us use centers, learning stations, and other versions of the same concept, Diller's work stations are simple and easy to maintain. My biggest hurdle in getting started with literacy work stations is setting up the schedule. After several tries, I finally came up with what I believe to be a thorough and effective schedule. Experience

After 30 years in the classroom (all at the same school in Louisiana), I retired from teaching. I taught 1st grade for fifteen years and 2nd grade for fifteen years. I was the director of our summer camp for three years and worked both before and after school programs. I also worked as the web designer & manager and technology point person for our school.

Teaching style

I always ran an orderly classroom, but I also believe that students must be given responsibilities in order to learn how to be responsible. I used a mini-society in my classroom to help build a community of learners. I enjoyed using hands-on center activities to teach my students, instead of JUST a textbook. I differentiated instruction for both low- and high-performing students.
