I love using literacy and math workstations as a way for students to independently practice skills we cover in class. These quick and easy stations provide a multitude of activities from which students can choose, which allows for easy differentiation. To help my students keep track of their progress in workstations, I developed this one-page checklist. It gives the students space to check off the stations as they visit them. It also provides a behavior/work habit analysis for each day's station

First days are hectic enough without wondering how little Billy Bob is getting home or whether or not Sally Sue can eat the el-cheapo snack you brought in for the class. That's where the First Day Student Information Sheet comes in handy. Most schools have either a Preview or Meet & Greet Night where students can see the classroom, meet the teacher, and drop off non-existent supplies. We all have those students who need a little extra attention to help keep them on task. One of our primary goals with these students is getting them to the point where they are monitoring their own behavior, releasing us from the responsibility. This inspired my creation of these useful behavior charts. There are three charts included: - My smiley face chart gives a great visual to the child of his/her progress for the day. Work Stations, as described by Debbie Diller, are a great way to provide independent practice for your students at their individual levels. While many of us use centers, learning stations, and other versions of the same concept, Diller's work stations are simple and easy to maintain. My biggest hurdle in getting started with literacy work stations is setting up the schedule. After several tries, I finally came up with what I believe to be a thorough and effective schedule. While this two-week ro

Experience

After 30 years in the classroom (all at the same school in Louisiana), I retired from teaching. I taught 1st grade for fifteen years and 2nd grade for fifteen years. I was the director of our summer camp for three years and worked both before and after school programs. I also worked as the web designer & manager and technology point person for our school.

Teaching style

I always ran an orderly classroom, but I also believe that students must be given responsibilities in order to learn how to be responsible. I used a mini-society in my classroom to help build a community of learners. I enjoyed using hands-on center activities to teach my students, instead of JUST a textbook. I differentiated instruction for both low- and high-performing students.
