Students cut out the pattern units--this is important! Students need to learn that patterns are based on the units that make them up. The units cannot be separated! In this activity, students look at a picture to determine the middle sound of a word. Then, students change just that middle letter to another letter to make a new word, also pictured. There are two levels: one which has three blanks spaces for the student to write the entire word, and one with only a blank space for the middle letter for students to write, stamp or sticker the missing letter. Celebrate Earth Day or any day with this sorting activity! Students will drag and drop to sort 12 pictures into "Paper" and "Cans."  In level A, each picture has a colored background that matches the category it belongs in. In level B, students will have to use their knowledge of the items to categorize them. Level B does not have the colored background cues.
