About the store
This is my 13th year in teaching middle school; six years as a 6th grade math teacher and six years as a 7th grade teacher. I've found that with the change to Common Core, our textbooks are just outdated and don't match my way of teaching concrete math in order to help understanding. My goal every year for my students who express to me that they don't like math, is to have them at least for one day (hopefully more) to say that they had enjoyed the class and the lesson when they didn't expect to.
This is my eighth year of teaching majority of special education classes. I think by teaching these classes I have become a better mathematician and a better teacher because of learning how to concretely get them to understand a topic before getting into algorithms.

This PowerPoint serves as a minilesson when it comes to finding distances between two points on a coordinate plane. This lesson breaks it up into six stages:
1) Finding the distance between two cities with the given information and the visual of a map.
2) Making the connection between the map questions and the coordinate plane.

6RPA3d Ratio Conversions with Measurement
This product has a list of measurement conversions. The first practice page has students practicing using the Conversion Sheet to get familiar with it. Then it progresses into using one of the conversion measurements and applying it to questions that involve the conversions as a ratio. The second page has ratio conversions in word problems where they have to use multiple steps in order to get to the answer.

I was amazed at the connection that students will make, especially with the tricky less than or fewer than phrases. Students always seem to think "4 less than x" is written like (4 - x). I have notes to help you through the PowerPoint, as well as some sites to use as a resource.

Teaching style
I like student centered activities; any exploration or use of manipulatives in the classroom is the best way to get students engaged. I like using PowerPoint for practice where students can use dry erase boards. I probably using this type of practice at least twice a week.
As I moved to 7th grade I found it challenging to find activities that students like to do. I focus more on scaffolding so that we, teacher and student, can take small steps in grasping the concept.
