If you use google classroom, this is a perfect assignment for the start of the school year. You'll get a writing sample with the paragraph as well as a colorful display of each student that you can print to decorate your room. It's a great way to get to know your students and their abilities. This document comes with the instructions as well as images of student examples. My students seem lo make the same editing mistakes over and over again. So, I created a very simple checklist to help them remember the basics. This is my way of fighting the texting language habits. This document is a template designed to be used in Google Classroom. It could be adapted to print if you were to make the chart boxes bigger. Currently the template has space for 10 words, but again, this can be adapted and changed to meet your needs. How I use this template is that I will pre-fill the words in the word column. Then I will post this as an assignment on google classroom. I use this same template for each story we read. Sometimes I also require students to choose their own words.

This PowerPoint is an overview of the 3 types of writing within common core: narrative, argumentative, and informative. There is an informational slide for each type of writing which includes the definition, characteristics and format. There is also a visual graphic organizer to represent each of the three types of writing. Each type of writing also includes the standards and the rubric for grading. This is geared toward 8th grade CA Common Core standards, but could easily be adapted.

I've taught 8th grade Language Arts over 15 years now. Within the subject, I've specialized in support classes, intensive classes, core classes and advanced classes. I've also taught the student newspaper elective, public speaking elective, yearbook and multimedia electives.

Teaching style

I like to introduce a topic through direct instruction. I believe that students should talk to one another about their learning and work together. Group work and partner work also show up in my classroom, as well as lots of writing.
