Great back to school activity! Want to start the year with an exciting lesson, but don't want to begin with a big unit? "Aesthetic" seems to be the buzzword of the year for kids. A scroll through the “For You” page on TikTok or carefully curated Instagram posts shows you just how precise many people are about how they present themselves or how they want to be perceived. Whether represented by your room, clothes, digital persona, or something else, each person has a “vibe” of some sort. This goes
This authentic writing assignment allows students to analyze their own generation or the ideas associated with growing up. It's so fun to see student creativity with this assignment. I have included a rubric, guidelines, links to structural examples, and several ideas to get students started. I typically assign this at the end of my unit on youth and generational conflict, where we read articles about their generation and generational conflict, analyze songs about youth/growing up, and particip
The Hunger Games opening activity for active learning with a focus on themes and classroom collaboration. I love using an anticipation guide to start off any major text we study in class. They are a great way to introduce themes that we can trace throughout our reading. Use these however you wish, but in my class, I have everyone stand in a line in the middle of the room. I put a statement on the board, and students walk to one side of the room if they agree and to the other side if they disagre

Experience

Teaching style
I have a real passion for empowering students and establishing reflective practice; as an English teacher, I get swept up in the excitement of literature and critical thinking, and I try to encourage my students to do the same. I especially love incorporating discussion as I believe collaborative speaking and listening opportunities are the cornerstone of critical thought in the classroom. I am a very animated teacher, but I also know that my students need structure and appreciate clean design.
Awards & shining teacher moments
