This Valentine's Day Volume Box Extension Project is a great way to connect volume concepts to hands-on real life, hands-on math for your students! Students will need to bring in a box (cereal, shoe, cracker, soda, whatever works!) from home for this project prior to completing this. We did the math work before the decorating. It walks them through area, perimeter, 2D/3D shapes, as well as volume concepts. Prior to completing this activity, my students had almost completed a full unit on volume
Our intermediate grades frequently use math "quick 4's" as a warm-up to kick off our math lessons! Quick 4's are extremely helpful if your district or school uses standards-based report cards or you're attempting to gather more data related to a particular standard related to student progress/performance related to a specific skill/area. There is an editable template in this download as well as an example of a "quick 4" that would be used in a 5th grade math class.
