Cenicienta story (preterito practice) - Cinderella reading

Students will engage prior knowledge as they read the familiar tale of Cenicienta (Cinderella) as told from her first-person perspective. As they read, they practice using the different forms of the preterito (preterite tense) of regular and irregular verbs. They will also be able to note some key words that indicate preterito tense (i.e. de repente, un día, etc.) Included is a series of pre reading strategies, comprehension questions, and post reading analysis to develop good reading skills in

Pretérito Imperfecto practice with Legend of the Condor (la Leyenda del Cóndor)

Using an old Quechua legend, students will practice their understanding of the preterito and imperfecto. This activity assumes they have some prior knowledge of the language concept and is probably based suited for intermediate level and above or native speakers. This is a good way to start off a lesson on the two past tenses or is a good way to review them. They will read the legend of the condor looking for the uses of the pretérito and imperfecto throughout the story. After reading, they

Los Colores Poster (Spanish colors poster)

A modern take on a poster* for the colors in Spanish. The word is written out in Spanish in that specific color. This way students do not translate the word "red" into "rojo" or vice versa. They see the word "rojo" out in the color red and make that association. *There are 2 posters included: one that uses the word "café" and the other that uses "marrón." (both mean brown). I also recently learned that some countries use the word "naranja" for the color orange as well as the fruit, so if you

Ricitos de Oro y Los Tres Osos (Goldilocks) preterito vs imperfecto practice

Using a well-known story, students will use prior knowledge to read and understand Ricitos de Oro y los Tres Osos (Goldilocks and the Three Bears) en Spanish. As they read, they will focus on telling the difference between the pretérito vs imperfecto and their uses. There are two versions of the story. 1) the student must change the verb to fit the story using the pretérito or imperfecto. 2) the student will circle the correct form of the verb in the pretérito or imperfecto. This material

Differences in Pretérito and Imperfecto: acronym handouts

The differences between the pretérito and the imperfecto can be one of the most confusing and difficult things for students to figure out and use correctly. These acronym handouts help students remember which verb to choose by using this mnemonic device. You will find 3 different sets of acronyms covering the pretérito and imperfecto uses with examples and space for students to take their own notes as well. Choose the one that best fits your purposes, print out, and hand out to students for e

Rana Ranita (Spanish verb or vocabulary board game)

Help save the Ranita from the perils of the swamp, so he can make it home safely to his family. A board game that can be adapted to any verb tense or vocabulary theme. All you need are the phrases or vocabulary words or other items for whatever topic you are covering. Since the board is not tied to one topic, it can be used for anything. It is typically played with groups of 3 or 4, but could be done with more, so you only have to make enough copies for the groups. I recommend to print on car

Pretérito Imperfecto practice (práctica) - Police Incident Report

This is a fun activity for the students to practice using the preterito and imperfecto in a real time event that takes place in the classroom. The instructions will give more detail, but the teacher arranges for someone to come into the classroom while the teacher steps out for a minute. While the teacher is away, the "criminal" (usually another teacher) does a few mischievous things like drawing on the white board, taking a backpack, etc. Once the criminal leaves and the teacher returns, the

Teaching style

I love the language and culture and enjoy using real world materials and experiences to expose students to how they can use the language in everyday applications. I want to make sure that students can communicate in the language. If they can't communicate, what's the point? I also enjoy using stories to have students learn the language through reading, conversation, and listening. They invoke their prior knowledge and apply it to language learning.
