Investigating Points, Lines, and Planes Activity

Created by
Lexie
This is a great activity I usually use the 2nd day of my Geometry classes. The first day they learned about points, lines, and planes, and were given a brief explanation on how to draw figures. For this activity I have the students work in groups of 2 or 3 and give them notecards, string, scissors, and tape (optional). They are required to "create" each statement using these materials. I walk around the room and sign off when they have it correct. I do NOT help them. I just say yes or no.

This is Bingo game is a great way to review or practice the important skill of simplifying expressions. To start the game, have each student create their own game board using a pen or marker (if they use a pencil, they may try and move their answers to get a bingo quicker). Before I begin the game, I walk around to make sure that all the game boards have been completed and write the numbers 1 to 20 on the board. To play the game, I usually will accept a traditional Bingo, box of 4 together, o

Solving Systems of Equations Relays

There are a total 13 different relays, including solving by substitution, elimination, graphing, systems of inequalities, and linear programming. This is a great activity to use to practice how to do these problems that students find complicated. Students sit in rows or groups and 1 student does one step, then passes the paper to the next person. They may not talk or help each other until they show their answer to you. If their answer is incorrect, then they may work together to fix it. Als

This activity has 6 problems of shapes on coordinate planes. You can copy the worksheet onto cards and cut them up so students have the opportunity to share cards and get up to work together. The activity requires the students to find the area and perimeter of each figure by using the distance formula and recognize the base and height of the different shapes. Even though it is just like a worksheet, if you you copy it on construction paper and cut them into cards, students will think that it

This is a great way for students to practice using the Distributive Property and simplifying. Students work out a problem (the start problem) find the correct answer, and do the problem attached to the answer. It should make a line of dominos. Students love these types of activities and it challenges them to find the correct answer. WHEN CUTTING THIS OUT, CUT THE OUTSIDE AND DOWN THE MIDDLE ON THE DARK LINE

There are 5 different stations that have all different types of problems dealing with writing and understanding circles and their equations. Below is a list of what each station requires to be completed: 1. Write an equation given a picture or center and radius/diameter. 2. Find the center and radius when given an equation. 3. Write equations for cirlces that satisfy the requirements (tangent to a line, crosses through a point). 4. Completing the square to find the equation of a

This is a great review activity for students needing practice on their fractions. There are 30 problems total, 5 each of adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, writing as a mixed number, and writing as an improper fraction. The 4 sets of operations problems are all with simple fractions (no mixed numbers), but will require the students to reduce their fractions and sometimes write as a mixed number. It is a great game and students will love to play it! I usually start off with them maki

This is a great Bingo game that can be used for reviewing simplifying complex numbers and solving quadratic equations (that are complex). Students love to play the game and it gives them an excellent opportunity to review the topic. I usually make the students create their board using a marker or pen and we cross off answers once they have been completed. I will use the same board for the entire game having the possible winning combinations: traditional bingo, 4 corners, box of 4, double bin

To play the game you make copies of the 2 problem sheets on construction paper. Then you make one copy of the boy at the board (the old maid card). I usually make 10 sets of cards. This graphic organizer is great to use as a review of the more difficult 2-step equations. These are the problems that I usually find students struggle with the most. I suggest copy it on a different color than white (students love this for some reason) and possibly markers or colored pencils. If you pass out markers, tell them to work it out on a separate paper before putting it on the graphic organizer (just in case they are wrong). You could go over the problems one-by-one yourself, or yo

This worksheet is an excellent way for students to practice the fundamentals of graphs and functions. The first 8 problems are graphs that require the students to create a story that fits the graph. The last 8 problems are stories that the students have to create a graph for and label the axis appropriately. A great start to students truly understanding how graphs and functions work.

I have always struggled teaching this topic, and another teacher shared this song and it worked wonders on my students. I made this graphic organizer to tie everything together for them and it worked great. The first page is what is given to the students and the 2nd page is your reference for what the song is saying. I usually have the students make a beat on the desk and they will remember the song, which will let them factor cubes!

Procedure: Pass out 1 set of 10 problems to each student, making sure that they are faced down and that the students don't try and get a head start by peaking. You give each student a set of the cards (I recommend copying them on different colors of paper, that way they aren't as easy to get mixed up). Teaching style

Each school that I have taught in has been considered a "low performing" school and I have always worked with students that come in lacking prior knowledge and the motivation to be successful. I create and use a lot of activities and games that help keep my students engaged. A co-worker of mine calls me, "The Game Queen."

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was a Level 5 teacher for the 2011-2012 in Tennessee, with some of the highest scores in Algebra 2 for the school district (which included my inclusion class)

My own education history

I graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1994. I attended Florida State University and earned my Bachelors degree in December 1998 for Curriculum and Instruction: Mathematics Education (6-12). Masters, Mathematics Education K-8, University of Alaska Southeast.

Additional biographical information

I love teaching and I have always been able to make connections with my students and peer teachers. I hope that you enjoy my activities, worksheets, tests, and anything else.
