This is an introduction to the archetypes in a dystopian novel. I would use this either as a pre-reading tool, or during the unit as part of a reader's workshop (although earlier on). It has definitions for archetypes, what their purpose is, a video trailer to a dystopian novel, the opportunity for partner turn/talk, and a journal entry to demonstrate understanding of the archetypes in their own reading.

This lesson plan includes definitions of types of humor, clips that can be used, explanations of the clips, a handout that can be used to identify the types of humor specifically in Tom Sawyer, and lastly a wrap up/closure activity. While it is used specifically with Tom Sawyer, it could be used any novel that is humorous.

This is a definition essay for The Outsiders. Students start with a word that is tied in with a theme of the novel. They will write a 5 paragraph essay in which they demonstrate the understanding of the word in the novel, their own life, and the world. Students are making text to text, text to self, and text to world connections through the essay while demonstrating their ability to analyze the novel.

This powerpoint could be used as an introduction to figurative language in poetry. It is meant to get students interested by including examples of these devices in music.

Can be used to show demonstration of character traits. This particular one is for Brave New World, however it could be used with any novel to show understanding. A nice during reading assessment.
