In preparation for Paper 1 in May, students have to write A LOT of essays for practice. As teachers, we don't have time to grade and provide feedback for all of these lengthy essays. I use Writer's Workshop sessions to allow students to give each other effective feedback for improving their writing. This particular PowerPoint is designed for a Paper 1 Commentary on a poetry option. I use some lingo in this presentation (interpretive sentences, commentary) but have also tried to explain wha

This Drama Guide is meant to help students record and analyze Shakespeare's Othello. The first three pages are set up as a chart focusing on elements of drama (setting, characters, themes, etc.) The remaining 5 pages are dedicated to plot questions as well as discussion questions. Since this Guide was originally set up for AP Literature, the discussion questions are geared toward the themes of jealousy, manipulation and revenge. I didn't focus this Drama Guide on specific scene and line numb

Experience

I have taught all grades of high school and all levels from my sweet "three-reaters" of 9th grade to IB Literature English A1 Higher Level.I have even taught virtually in NC and in unconventional classes in an alternative setting. I feel as though I have a strong understanding of a variety of learners and their individual needs. Currently I am teaching both AP Literature and IB Literature English A1.

Teaching style

With my current position, I find myself being a facilitator rather than a teacher. I know that we are not supposed to "teach to the test," but IB's assessments are fabulous (and not multiple choice), so following their standards and preparing for their assessments just makes for good teaching.

My own education history

I received my Bachelor's Degree from Oakland University in Michigan within Secondary English Education. I am certified in AP Language and Literature as well as IB Literature.

Additional biographical information

In AP Literature, I teach Ethan Frome, The Things They Carried, Othello, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Importance of Being Earnest and Much Ado about Nothing. Contact me if you would like to purchase anything specific to these works. In IB Literature, I teach the Individual Oral Commentary with Shakespeare's Sonnets, Importance of Being Earnest and The Guide by Narayan. For the Genre Study, I use Heart of Darkness, The Things They Carried, Annie John and Their Eyes were watching God. Contact me if you would like to purchase anything specific to these works. My classroom is mainly discussion based, so I can also provide lessons involving Socratic Seminar and student-lead discussions.
