Writing Numbers in Word Form: journal notes 4.NBT.A.2

Spelling always seems to be an issue! I give this simple journal page as a reference to students. It also includes the rule for hyphens and a few examples. We use composite books as math journals, so the following pages are notes that can be copied 2 per page, cut in half, and glued into journals. I have also used 3-ring binders, so the same information follows on one sheet. Just be aware it is the same information in different formats! There are two versions. The first version is just

Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1-100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. For example, express 36 + 8 as 4 (9 + 2). These challenges require higher-order thinking and an understanding of using Venn diagrams to find the GCF and LC

Fractions: Problem Solving with All Operations_NF.B.3_5.NF.B.6_5.NF.B.7.C

The common core incorporates problem solving in the Standards for Mathematical Practice and throughout the standards in almost every concept! If students are able to complete all computations correctly but are unsure of when and how to apply them, they are not proficient in those areas. For that reason, I have included problems with all operations in the same lesson. I consider these to be application problems more than true problem solving, because they are all applications of a specific c

These pictures are wonderful for discussing fractions and estimating fractional parts! Although there is not a correct answer, the teacher can tell from student responses and explanations how well they understand the concept of fractions. This idea is mentioned in Van de Walle’s Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics. I suggest using this during calendar or a number talk time. The value is in the discussions. There are a couple of free samples in the preview for you to try. If you have an

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.) CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.2 Solve word problems inv
