Dust Bowl Disaster (Reading A-Z Level X) Writing Prompts

I have created writing prompts to correlate with Reading A - Z's texts you can get through their website (if you haven't used this site, you're missing out!) I expect my students to use at least 3 details in a paragraph. There are enough details in the text to support this expectation. FYI: I have included reminders above the writing (I expect a topic sentence, details, and a closing sentence). Feel free to white out if that is not part of your writing expectation. My students do this as pa

Elapsed Time of the Day

Students can continue to practice finding elapsed time daily with a new problem, new time, new type of problem, etc. Elapsed time is a difficult skill for many students solely because there are SO MANY kinds of problems that require them to find elapsed time (looking for the end time, working backward to find the start time, finding the amount of time that has passed, etc.) I have my students do this each morning/beginning of the math block depending on our school wide schedule for the followi

Fraction Of The Day

I have my students do this each morning/beginning of our math block depending on the school schedule. I have seen it make a difference when kids do this for the weeks/months after beginning our unit on fractions with much more retention that student who do not do this practice daily. I give them one page a week and have them work with a different fraction each day: find equivalent fractions (any strategy they can use), compare fractions, show/represent it, and then a space where I can do somet

Weekly Goals

Students can create and record a weekly goal for themselves each week (behavior, work habits, social, academic, etc.) I have students start this each Monday, attached to their weekly homework, and then they return back to reflect before turning in on Friday. This helps kids get in the habit of creating goals and realistic steps to achieving success.

3 - 2 - 1 Reading Notes

This serves as a guide for students to monitor themselves and ensure they are getting meaning from reading non-fiction text. My students write book reviews/recommendations OFTEN in my class. I have included one page just of the 3 (things I learned), 2 (opinions I have), and 1 (question I still have) guide, and a 2nd page with the same guiding questions but also a spot for a review. I've found students like to read what they know their friends and peers have liked so this also helps encourage mo

Teaching style

High expectations are above all else. Without those set expectations, students will not know what they are working toward. I like having students work together and learn from one another. It is important to know at the end of the day what each individual student understands and has grasped, but working together in collaboration is a huge life skill for many careers.
