I have my students do this each morning/beginning of our math block depending on the school schedule. I have seen it make a difference when kids do this for the weeks/months after beginning our unit on fractions with much more retention that student who do not do this practice daily. Students can create and record a weekly goal for themselves each week (behavior, work habits, social, academic, etc.) I have students start this each Monday, attached to their weekly homework, and then they return back to reflect before turning in on Friday. This helps kids get in the habit of creating goals and realistic steps to achieving success.

This serves as a guide for students to monitor themselves and ensure they are getting meaning from reading non-fiction text. My students write book reviews/recommendations OFTEN in my class. I have included one page just of the 3 (things I learned), 2 (opinions I have), and 1 (question I still have) guide, and a 2nd page with the same guiding questions but also a spot for a review. I've found students like to read what they know their friends and peers have liked so this also helps encourage mo
