Making Language Visible

This resource helps promote creative and critical thinking, as well as support the development of language usage in the classroom. The resource aligns to the ACARA EAL/D Learning Progression, which is a tool used by Classroom Teachers and EAL/D Specialist Teachers to differentiate learning experiences for EAL/D learners. Included in the pack is a detail lesson plan, differentiated WALT/WILF, and a visual prompt poster to support the routine.

This resource can be used by Classroom Teachers and EAL/D Specialist Teachers to track student's progression in learning English. It aligns to the ESL Scales (NSW) to facilitate higher quality differentiation, and also the EAL/D Learning Progression to make reporting to parents and ERN easier. It can be used with the ESL Scale "I can Statements" to help make learning more visible to students, and allow them to take ownership over their learning of the English language.

English language learners are not only learning a new language/dialect, they are learning through a new language (learning curriculum content) and also learning about the language (learning how English is similar/different to their other languages/dialects). In conjunction with explicit teaching and scaffolding, learning intentions provide students with an understanding of the lesson purpose, allow for a visual reference point, and promote an opportunity for feedback.
