Teaching Computation using strategies instead of algorithms

This is a teacher resource book that provides information about a series of strategies for all operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This resource is the culmination of many years work including with schools who have replaced the teaching of operations using algorithms completely with these strategies with very positive results in terms of student attitude, confidence and knowledge. Information provided includes background information, details of the strategies and exa

Posters for Computation - Basic Facts and Operations (summary and individual

This file contains 70 posters that provide a range of strategies for working out basic facts computations and computations for operations beyond basic facts. There is a poster for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This file contains summary posters and a poster for each strategy individually for both basic facts and operation strategies. This file contains all the posters I have made for computation which I also have available as separate files in my TpT store. (This file is b

Posters for Computation - Basic Facts (summary and detail posters)

This file contains 37 posters that provide visual prompts for basic fact strategies for computations involving 1-digit numbers. There is a summary poster for each operation and an individual poster for each strategy e.g. Make ten (addition) The posters can be printed large for display on classroom walls or small for student reference in their mathematics books. Other files in my TpT store contain just the summary posters for basic fact strategies and there are files with strategies for operatio

Equations - match word story (Multiplication and Division)

This product is a worksheet where students cut out equations and number stories and match them. The focus is on the equation as a representation of the story. Students need to match the equation that represents the story, not try to find an equation that works out the answer. Focus is on the START, ACTION (joining equal groups - multiplication or separating a total into equal groups - division) and the END. The unknown therefore can be any of these three.

Posters for Computation - Operations Beyond basic facts (summary and individual

This file contains 34 posters that provide visual prompts for computation strategies for computations beyond basic facts. There is a summary poster for each operation and an individual poster for each strategy e.g. Break Up 1 Number (addition) The posters can be printed large for display on classroom walls or small for student reference in their mathematics books. Other files in my TpT store contain just the summary and individual detail posters for basic fact strategies with summary and individ

Posters for Computation - Operation Concepts and Basic Facts (summary posters)

This file contains posters that provide visual prompts about the concept of each operation and for basic fact strategies for computations involving 1-digit numbers. The operation concept posters explain what each operation means. For example addition is joining, subtraction is taking away but is also difference and comparison.. The posters can be printed large for display on classroom walls or small for student reference in their mathematics books. Other files in my TpT store contain other sets

Posters for Computation - Basic Facts (summary posters)

This file contains 4 posters that provide a range of strategies for working out basic facts computations. There is a poster for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division basic facts. The posters can be printed large for display on classroom walls or small for students to keep as reference in their mathematics books. The four posters in this file are summary posters. Another file in my TpT store also includes detailed posters with a poster for each strategy individually.

Teaching Basic Facts using strategies

This is a teacher resource booklet to support teachers developing lessons, activities and programs involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of single-digit numbers. It provides a summary of strategies that can be used to develop understanding and associated number sense rather than just committing these facts to memory. This resource has developed from my work as an educational consultant for nearly 20 years and is based on the work of many mathematics educators. The idea
Preview of Matching Cards - Addition strategy 1-digit numbers (ten-frame representation)

Matching Cards - Addition strategy 1-digit numbers (ten-frame representation)

Students match 2 cards that show the same 1-digit addition represented using ten-frames. One set of cards has 9+ a 1-digit number and the other set of cards has 10 + 1-digit numbers. Students find the pairs of cards e.g. 9+6 will match the picture of 10+5. There are 2x10 cards in the game. Recommendation: Copy each set of cards onto a different colour paper before laminating to help students find the pairs more easily.

Matching Cards - Addition facts - Make ten equations

This resource includes 2 sets of cards. 1 set depicts addition equations that total 10 with the second addend missing. Students need to match the single-digit number card that completes the equation e.g. 3 + ? = 10 matches the 7 card. Play face up for learning and face down for consolidation. Suggest each set of cards is copied onto a different colour paper for ease of matching.

Addition Basic Facts - Near Ten 3-in-a-row game

This is a simple game that can be used to reinforce knowledge of Near Ten addition basic facts e.g. 7+4 is near 6+4 (+1). Students choose two different game cards. One shows either 7+, 8+ or 9+. The other card shows either 4,5 or 6. These two cards create a random addition basic fact. Students match this addition fact with a matching representation of the fact that highlights the make ten fact the fact created is near e.g. 8+6 would match 8+ 2+4 on the game-board.There is no need to work out ans

Addition Strategy - Break Up 2 numbers (2-digit place value) 3-in-a-row game

The game practises the strategy where students break up 2-digit numbers into place value parts. Students choose 2 game cards to create an addition computation. They then match their computation with the ones on the game board where the 2 numbers have been broken into place value parts. The game is simple, effective and quick to play.

Addition strategy - Break Up 1 number (2-digit place value) 3-in-a-row game

This game practises the strategy for addition where one of the numbers given is broken into place value parts e.g. 36 as 30+6. The students match the representation of the addition with 1 number broken up to the addition created from the cards they chose for their turn. They don't need to calculate answers. The game practises them recognising the strategy

Addition strategy - Break Up 1 number 2-digit compatible numbers 3-in-a-row game

This is another 3-in-a-row game where students play against a partner to practise a particular strategy. The strategy in this game is where 1 number is broken into compatible numbers (multiples of ten) to make the Addition computation easier. The computations involve 2-digit numbers.

Matching Cards - Near Double basic addition facts (4 cards)

This resource teaches and consolidates the near doubles basic addition facts e.g. 5+6 = 5+5 +1. There are 4 cards - the initial fact, the double it is linked to, a picture of the fact using ten frames, and the answer. Suggest each card is copied onto different colour paper to assist students finding pairs in consolidation activities where the cards are face down.

Matching Cards - Make Ten - fact family as equations

This product has 4 cards that show the four facts for each Make Ten basic fact in equation form. The first card also has a picture of a ten frame to show the number and help students see what they need to add to complete the ten. Suggest each card is copied onto different colour paper to aid students making pairs as a consolidation game (with cards upside down). Use as a learning activity/math centre facing up.

Equations - match word story (Addition and Subtraction)

This product is a worksheet for students to practise matching number stories to equations. The focus is for them to represent the story as it appears, not to write an equation they will use to solve it. Focus is on the START, ACTION (addition as joining or subtraction as separating) and the END. The unknown can be in any position in the story. Context is the same for each story and the numbers are deliberately small so the focus is on the equation not on the solution.

Matching Cards - Addition computation strategy - add 2-digit numbers

Students choose two cards, one from each set and match the addition computations based on the Change 2 numbers strategy e.g. 37+19 would match 36+20. Students can match the cards face up, turn them over and play Memory (choose 2 and see if they match or Snap etc. Recommendation: Copy each set of cards onto different colour paper to make the matching pairs easier and more efficient to find.

Matching Cards - Doubles addition basic fact (4-cards)

This product shows the doubles basic facts as additions with ten frames so students can see there are 2 frames with the same number. The other cards show the double as an addition (e.g. 3+3), as a stated double (e.g. Double 3) and the answer card (e.g. 6). Students can learn the concept matching the cards face-up or consolidate the concept playing matching games with the cards face-down. Suggest each set of cards is copied onto different colour paper for ease of finding pairs when the cards are
