About the store

I have almost 30 years of teaching ELA courses in grades 7-12 in public high schools in three states. I have held teaching certificates in New York, Ohio, and Georgia and have the most experience teaching American Literature, World Literature, Contemporary Literature, Advanced Composition, and Advanced Placement Language & Composition. I also have mentored many student teachers through the years, allowing me to create many files to help assist young teachers just starting out. I feel my teaching experience has helped me shape the many files for sale in my store.

This viewing guide introduces the idea of reading/viewing with a purpose. Students preview the document before watching the first twenty minutes of the movie "Stand By Me," which is based on our unit novella, The Body by Stephen King. The Hobbit Character Posters & Tasks

I use this as an alternative to body biographies in my classes. Included are images for character posters for Bilbo, Gandalf, Gollum, & Smaug. I used a projector and Internet images, but you can always resize and simply paste to the top of posters for students. Also included are tasks each group completes. This is a perfect activity to set up collaborative notes for the targeted final assessment for the book, which is also available in my TpT store.

This exercise is to be used after students have read chapters 3 and 5 from Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City. It lists a brief psychological profile and asks students to find textual evidence to prove this profile correct. I use it to prep for written tasks on the NYS Regents, but it is an excellent exercise for any teacher seeking to help students with citing evidence and providing parenthetical citations in their written work.

This tally sheet tracks camera movement in the opening scenes of the 1958 film "Touch of Evil," directed by Orson Welles. Students will review the basic types of movement before using their visual guide to tally three types of camera movement in the first five minutes. Students follow this with short answer questions that discuss the thematic purpose of camera movement in film.

Rumble Fish- Role Models- Final Test

I use this for a final assessment of the book Rumble Fish by S.E. Hinton. Best used after extensive in-class discussions about role models and mentors. It is a written response test in which students first read a simplified (I used AI to lower the reading level to seventh grade) and excerpted portion of the Psychology Today article, "Role Models and Choices" by Stanton S. Samehow. Students then are paired in groups and choose four of the eight options to respond to on giant post-its. Students
