I have almost 30 years of teaching ELA courses in grades 7-12 in public high schools in three states. I have held teaching certificates in New York, Ohio, and Georgia and have the most experience teaching American Literature, World Literature, Contemporary Literature, Advanced Composition, and Advanced Placement Language & Composition. I also have mentored many student teachers through the years, allowing me to create many files to help assist young teachers just starting out. "The Fall of the House of Usher"- House for Sale Mini-Project
This mini-project is a perfect way to have your students analyze the literal and symbolic features of the Usher House as they take on the role of a real estate agent desperately trying to sell this house. Students use persuasive language to "spin" the state of the house, and are given choice for how to respond. Bonus opportunities and additional resources are included.

Intertextuality Notes
This brief and simple powerpoint on intertextuality discusses the idea of "One Text" through unit examples. This year the examples come from: The Body by Stephen King, The Outsiders by SE Hinton, Rumble Fish by SE Hinton, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien, Heroes by Robert Cormier, and True Grit by Charles Portis. Students assume the role of private investigators in this culminating project for Karen M. McManus's novel One of Us is Lying. Students create investigation boards, write detective reports, and log evidence as they seek their murder suspect. A grading rubric is included.

The Botany of Desire- Design a Future-Proof Apple Project
This project can be used during the reading of chapter one ("The Apple") from Michael Pollan's nonfiction novel The Botany of Desire: A Plant's Eye View of the World. Students design, illustrate, and label their own "weird" apple, simulating artificial selection, as discussed extensively throughout the book.

Tuesdays With Morrie- Legacy Box Project
This project can be implemented at any time during the novel study unit for the novel Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom. The project asks students to identify a mentor, interview that mentor, and create a "legacy box" of wisdom gathered in the course of the interview. Extension activites can include a mini-unit on feature writing as well. A grading rubric is included with this project.

Teaching style
I believe first and foremost that in order to reach students, you must actively build rapport and trust. For this reason I consider myself to be a friendly and casual teacher with serious intent and purpose.
