I have almost 30 years of teaching ELA courses in grades 7-12 in public high schools in three states. I have held teaching certificates in New York, Ohio, and Georgia and have the most experience teaching American Literature, World Literature, Contemporary Literature, Advanced Composition, and Advanced Placement Language & Composition. I also have mentored many student teachers through the years, allowing me to create many files to help assist young teachers just starting out. This brief and simple powerpoint on intertextuality discusses the idea of "One Text" through unit examples. "Stand By Me"- 1st 20 minutes Viewing Guide
This viewing guide introduces the idea of reading/viewing with a purpose. Students preview the document before watching the first twenty minutes of the movie "Stand By Me," which is based on our unit novella, The Body by Stephen King. I usually have students work through their thoughts and opinions afterward by entering answers in a Google Form.

This open book assessment asks students to choose one of the first set of lessons Morrie Schwartz teaches in the first 20 chapters of Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom. Students also practice using Cornell-style notes by dissecting the lesson using the provided note prompts.

The Devil in the White City- Become an Alienist
This exercise is to be used after students have read chapters 3 and 5 from Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City. It lists a brief psychological profile and asks students to find textual evidence to prove this profile correct. I use it to prep for written tasks on the NYS Regents, but it is an excellent exercise for any teacher seeking to help students with citing evidence and providing parenthetical citations in their written work.

I believe first and foremost that in order to reach students, you must actively build rapport and trust. For this reason I consider myself to be a friendly and casual teacher with serious intent and purpose.
