The students must first choose what operation to use. Then, solve the problem. In my classes, I first have them complete the worksheet alone. Then, I put them with a group to compare their answers. It makes for a really good group discussion. The students must compare the operation they choose, as well as the work itself.

Introduction for Algebra students to Quadratic Equations: This is a problem solving activity which allows students to create their own plan to solve the problem. Most students generally create a table that allows them to see the basic pattern in a quadratic equation with A being negative. The values increase to the maximum point, then they decrease. This is the perfect activity to complete before starting a unit on quadratic equations.
